As we all know, when Elvis returned to live performances, the Astrodome was the first place he did outside Las Vegas. In 1970, from February 27 - March 1, he did six shows there (setting a new attendance record - around 180,000 people attended), as well as held two press conferences. ..... Now, if we start from the first press conference that was also filmed --- I've always had pictures of it dated as February 28, but I believe that to be incorrect... I just bumped into a video clip that gives the date and place as February 25th Airport Terminal, which sounds more logical to my ears ---> below is a b&w picture that was taken when Elvis arrived in Houston... coming off the plane he's wearing the same outfit as he did during the filmed first press conference. So apparently Elvis arrived in Houston, as well as held the first press conference on February 25th, 1970 ... if anyone can confirm this, it would be appreciated.
(IMG:http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u273/Jouni_/TKC/Houston%20Astrodome/1970-02---arrival.jpg) (IMG:http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u273/Jouni_/TKC/Houston%20Astrodome/1970-02-25.jpg)

Then we get to the shows .... I think pictures from all the other shows has been 'confirmed', but if anyone has pictures that are known to be either from the first or from the last show, do share. I don't have setlists to the shows (Ben?), but I recall reading from somewhere that Elvis did "One Night" during the first show, so the first shot might actually be from that particular show...?
(IMG:http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u273/Jouni_/TKC/Houston%20Astrodome/1970-02-27-aft.jpg) (IMG:http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u273/Jouni_/TKC/Houston%20Astrodome/1970-02-27-ev.jpg) (IMG:http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u273/Jouni_/TKC/Houston%20Astrodome/1970-02-28-aft.jpg)

(IMG:http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u273/Jouni_/TKC/Houston%20Astrodome/1970-02-28-ev.jpg) (IMG:http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u273/Jouni_/TKC/Houston%20Astrodome/1970-03-01-aft.jpg) (IMG:http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u273/Jouni_/TKC/Houston%20Astrodome/1970-03-01-ev.jpg)

And here's a few small shots from the second press conference held on March 1st (has the audio been released??). On the 'group shot' you can see Elvis showing off the Rolex he got from Astrodome people for breaking the attendance records ..... the last shot of Elvis in the blue 'fringe jacket' is from March 2nd, taken when Elvis was leaving the Astrodome.

Finally, in 1974 Elvis appeared again at the Astrodome. He held only two shows on March 3rd, and over 88,000 people attended, setting
yet another attendance record (for 'one-day-only appearance'). Below, pictures from the two '74 Astrodome shows.

Here's the tracklists from all six shows and One Night was only performed at the Opening Show so the photo of him with the guitar has to be from that show because I have listened to all the shows from this "season" & there are no songs that he could have used the guitar on.

Ben, I deleted your first post (the 'blank' one), hope you don't mind? And thanks for the setlists... I knew I could count on you with them. You wouldn't happen to have the '74 ones while you're at it... I know "Madison" has relased the afternoon show, but I have never seen the tracklisting for the evening show... though I think it's pretty much like the afternoon one, would still be cool to see it...

Considering how many people saw these shows (on both years), it's quite strange that not that many photos overall has surfaced... I have seen only ONE picture from both, the February 27th, 1970 opening show (now nicely confirmed), and the March 3rd, 1974 evening show ..... but NONE(!) that is known to be from the March 1st, 1970 evening show... Of course it's not a problem, I didn't know how to delete it myself, thank you.

There is a setlist for both shows but for the second show there is no audio so I think all the info is from a review of the show but I'll post the setlist for it here. Don't take it as gospel please because I don't know if it is 100% correct (maybe Rex has some info on this show).

March 3rd, 1974. (8.00pm) Houston, TX. Astrodome
Songs Performed At This Show: See See Rider: I Got A Woman: Love Me: Tryin’ To Get To You: All Shook Up: Steamroller Blues: Teddy Bear-Don't Be Cruel: Love Me Tender: Johnny B. Goode: Hound Dog: Fever: Polk Salad Annie: Why Me Lord(with J.D. Sumner): suspicious Minds: Introduction of Band: I Can't Stop Lovin’ You: Help Me: An American Trilogy: Let Me Be There: Funny How Time Slips Away: Can't Help Falling In Love
ATTENDANCE: 44,175

Great info about this series of shows......maybe the lack of photos could be part explained by the fact that he was so far from the audience......so the official pics are there but not many audience shots have turned up......I have a friend who was there for one of the shows in 1970.....he tells me it was amazing!!!

Thank you, Jean! ... Your friend was there in 1970?! Would love to read his memories ... is he a member here? (IMG:http://elvis-tkc.com/forum2/style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)
..... And you have a good point there. Maybe the fans who took pictures there think they're nothing fancy as Elvis is just a small 'dot' on them... but I think those kind of shots are pretty kool. Of course it would be nice to see Elvis clearly, but the pictures give you an idea of how they saw the shows, as well as how big the Astrodome really is. Here's a good example ... no idea from what show the picture is, but I believe it's from one of the 1970 show...

Jouni... as far as I know he's not a member here....he's a member of my site.....I'll ask him to tell me about it - again! LOL

As for the pics......i like to see the whole scenario too....so different to other Elvis shows....little contact with the audience, no kissing, Ronnie in that cage thing for the sound....no orchestra......not only did it look so different - sounded different too...just Elvis and the band and singers...great stuff!

'Jouni' date='Mar 11 2009, I thought maybe we should try to get some facts straight regarding to Elvis' Houston Astrodome visits.
Especially the first one, since there seems to be some confusion... at least on my part. (IMG:http://elvis-tkc.com/forum2/style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

EVENTS EACH DAY for ELVIS Show= Eleven. (11) ~ ELVIS was EVENT Number 8.
*EVENT #7 = A CHUCK WAGON RACE around the Rodeo arena area. (I would prefer a chuck wagon race to Jackie Kahane)
(This was done because it would divert everyones attention, while they got Elvis out of the Bus into the Open Top Red Convertible)
*First (for each show) They would tow the Circular Stage into position, the technicans connected up the cables.(from the Roof)
*The Stage revolved not in a complete cirfcle but made an 80 degree turn to the left & then the same to the right.

*Suddenly the lights went out and the Spot Light was focused on the Red Car! Elvis was then Driven onto the Field
*The Vehicle cruised quite fast, anti-clockwise around the outer area of the Rodeo field, close to the Front Rows of the circle.
*From a Front Row seat Elvis Passed only a few feet away from you, for a Brief moment (very exciting Show Part)
"ELVIS was standing up next to the Driver, waving as he passed by.

This is a very interesting topic!! (IMG:http://elvis-tkc.com/forum2/style_emoticons/default/notworthy.gif)
I also have the 6 shows from 1970, a shame none of these are really of high quality.
Must been very difficult to record in this huge place, wonder how fans that actually where there ,think about the sound problem.
Ho did it sound there?

As for 1974,the Madison soundboard is a real treat!!
Elvis and his band/singers,nothing more, nothing less!!
By looking at Ben's supposed tracklist from the evening show,i wondered how "American trilogy" could sound in this setting...

So much people and no AR in sight so far...someone must be sitting on it.. (IMG:http://elvis-tkc.com/forum2/style_emoticons/default/undecided.gif)
Does anyone know the attendence of the two 1974 concerts?

Found some more pics on my hardrive..
The 1970 one in the red jeep,is he wearing blue?
Or is it just the flash that makes it like blue and it's actually white?

NEWSPAPER CUTTING from HOUSTON ~ ABOUT ELVIS' SECURITY DURING THE 3 DAYS. DATED 2nd March 1970

Attached File  houstonshows005.jpg ( 135.16K ) Number of downloads: 23

Elvis's guard had it rough :

"If you wanted to get through you'd better have a badge and a gun." Pete Kimbrel was a tired, tired man Sunday night.
What he needed was take a warm bath and forget the week end, but what he did was go to work as a Houston police dispatcher.

KIMBREL HAD JUST SPENT two days, his days off, guarding the most recent super-idol on the Houston scene: Elvis. Elvis Presley, that is.
He spent those two days watching out for the singing star, standing between him and the ogling, happy, occasionally screaming
crowds that just wanted to touch him. And just tear the clothes from his back. "The teeny-boppers were everywhere,"

Kimbrel said wearily. "Elvis has his own bodyguards, but he wanted the Houston police too—the local police can move him around better."
Kimbrel and about 100 other policemen guarded Presley at his hotel—
"He had the whole eighth floor"—escorted him to the Domed Stadium for his rodeo appearances, and stood guard around him there

"At the Saturday matinee (3rd show) a man got through and started to run toward the stand," Kimbrel said.
He patted his stomach and smiled shaking his head. "I told another officer, 'Go get him, RABBIT.' You never saw such; bulldogging in your life."
(I love the fact the guy sent to intercept this fan is called Rabbit! REX)

IN THE SHADOW OF A JUMPING, swinging guitar, the man was wrestled to the ground, shouting "He's my idol. He's my idol."

At the hotel, fans tried desperately to get through for an autograph or a little peek at Elvis.

"At one of the press conferences, I saw a rope start coming down: a balcony," Kimbrel said.
"They were trying to get to him that way- they had jumped across from another roof."

Gray hairs speck Kimbrel's head. It's been a while since he got excited over a singing star.
"He didn't do much for me," he grinned. "He didn't turn me on...............

Thanks for the replys! REX, that is simply fantastic ... you always come up with all kinds of kool info I've never seen anywhere else... and this is exactly what I'm always looking for when starting a new thread. And Johan, yes, that's the "Blue Broquade" suit Elvis can be seen wearing on one of the 'jeep' pictures ... he wore it during the February 28, 1970 afternoon show. I believe that the picture you posted just before that one, is also from the same show... the one that looks like it was taken from a mile away from the audience...

Nope... I think it's actually the same "fringe jacket" he wore also when left the Astrodome on March 2nd, 1970. He wore it at least a couple of times over his suits when heading for backstage before the shows.

EDIT: You were referring to one of the pictures REX posted earlier (post #9), correct?

Looks more like a jacket Jeane.
In fact,it looks like the one he has on while meeting Nixon!

one is a line by line listing of the 200ft of film, which she sent me with the Orig: film so I could add a magnetic blank sound strip,
and then dub suitable sound onto it, for the Non Elvis Rodeo bits, + Elvis on Stage parts, and she allowed me to make myself a copy

Elvis in Houston - 1970

With the success of Elvis' return to the Las Vegas concert stage in August 1969 and February 1970, he and his manager
Colonel Parker then branched out with a six-show engagement at the Houston Livestock and Rodeo. Held in the Houston Astrodome,
the shows were scheduled as both matinee and evening performances on February 27/28 and March 1, 1970.

Elvis held a press conference around noon on February 27th at the Astroworld Hotel, where he and his entourage were staying.
Following are some of the questions he was asked and the answers Elvis gave:

Press: Elvis, can you give us - I understand with all the big engagements like Las Vegas, etc.
- the reason why you selected the Livestock Show and Rodeo this year?

Elvis: Well, they asked me to do it, and I was anxious to do some live appearances.
I haven't....it'd been a long time since I'd been on stage in front of anybody live,
and I was anxious to do some live appearances and I thought it would be a good opportunity to get in front of the people.

Press: Have you ever seen the inside of the [Astro] Dome before?

Elvis: Never have. It scares the…(laughs)... it's a big place man.

Press: I mean does this indicate that with your type dress and everything now, that you're changing a little bit of style,
perhaps in deference to what you did a few years ago?

Elvis: I don't know. I think that you'd have to see the show. It's difficult to tell. I don't feel any different.
I don't think the dress has that much to do with it. I got the idea from a karate suit because I studied karate for a long time,
and I had 'em make up a couple suits like it.

Press: ...We think we're gonna set all kinds of records down here.

Elvis: I hope so. I hope I can give'em a good show. That's the most important thing.

Press: No question about that. You sure will.

Elvis: If I can give 'em a good show, I'll feel like I've done something, man.

Elvis was very nervous for the first matinee. The sound in the huge domed stadium was not good.
There were only 16,708 people in the audience, and Elvis left after the show feeling very disappointed in himself.
Elvis went back to his hotel room and took a nap after telling his associate Gee Gee Gambill,
"Well, that's it. I guess I just don't have it anymore."
After his nap, they noticed out the hotel window the line of cars backed up for miles trying to get into the Astrodome.
Elvis: "Well I'll be damned, I guess I've still got it after all."

Robert Hilburn, reporter for the "Los Angeles Times" wrote of that evening's Show:
"...Presley's voice was stronger, the stage rotation smoother and the pace sharper than at the matinee. Elvis himself was masterful. His voice
remained the best in rock-pop music, and his stage movements, less self-conscious than last summer... were in perfect harmony with the music."

In that engagement Elvis went on to break attendance records for the Houston Livestock Show.

At another press conference held on Sunday afternoon March 1, 1970,
Elvis was presented with a limited edition Rolex "King Midas" watch, a Stetson hat, and a gold Houston deputy sheriff's badge.
He also received from RCA five new gold record awards.

REX, where did you get this piece of information? As I stated on my first post, I found a video clip from the web of the first press conference that was dated 'February 25th at the Airport Terminal'... but I'm not saying that it's correct... as a matter a fact, I'd much rather believe your sources than something I found off the web, but I'm just curious... is it from a magazine? ..... And something that just crossed my mind... if the first press conference was held at the Astroworld Hotel, where was the other one held? I think it's quite obvious that they were not in the same place... (IMG:http://elvis-tkc.com/forum2/style_emoticons/default/undecided.gif)

Now you have me having some doubts also? but the 27th is mentioned in 2 sources so far,
I haven't finished my search, so will look for more Cross References.
My info so far on the the time line is. (some dates only have one source for some of this info)

23rd Feb. closes Vegas International Season

24th Feb (Elvis is a blank, but he usually sees next International Acts opening.)
Colonel Parker arrives in Houston with some of his Management Staff To check final arrangements for Elvis/Astrodome

25th Feb Elvis arrives late (?) at Houston Airport. Does a very brief Press Conference.
(so far I don't think any of us have put up pictures of this, can't figure out why, but I'm sure its not the pictures of Elvis wearing
the Red Shirt, with white sleeveless jacket. Elvis Does this Interview at the ASTROWORLD HOTEL, the windows are high up in
the Hotel, and it feels like its Daylight~Bright! I've had a High Quality 16mm film of this Interview for years,"mid 70s"

26th Feb Elvis goes to the Astrodome, to see the place - do some sound checks and a few Rehearsals, - he is very unhappy about the sound
saying to Glen Hardin "just don't try to fight it" I'm pretty certain no press conference on this day....

27th Feb Mid-day press conference (Red Shirt, white bolero)Actually I put Around Noon, so maybe an Hour earlier ~ I've always thought it was
before any of the shows on this day - some of my Houston Press cuttings haven't turned up yet, Another thing is MARIA DAVIES report,
for the time she arrives in Houston, is Flight arriving at 7am, then travelling to the Astroworld Hotel, but she doesn't seem to hear about
the press conference on that day, or mention about knowing about it on later days. (which is strange as she talks with the Colonel & Diskin)
(I should mention the Astroworld is a Really Very Large complex of Buildings, all the Major USA Hotel chains have built hotels in this
Astroworld Area. At this time (Feb 1970) they all Said they are ASTROWORLD HOTELS, so 3 or 4 Motor Inns, 3 Holiday Inns &
many others-are all Astroworld Hotels, which at the time was reported as a great deal of confusion for Elvis Fans.
So you can see even the most fanatical of fans would have some trouble finding out what might be going on, ahead of the 1st show.

27th Feb 2pm and 7.45pm shows.

28th Feb 2pm and 7.45pm shows - Priscilla flies in late in the day, to see the 2 Elvis shows the following day

1st -Mar 2pm and 7.45pm shows.
a PRESS CONFERENCE also held at the ASTROWORLD HOTEL. This is for all the Texans (with the Hats) to thank Elvis for coming to do the
shows at the Astroworld, and give him the Rolex watch, and badge (that the Colonel demanded he should have one, so they did)
we have a lot of pictures from this. (I have another pic from this with this lady!? see below)
THIS Seems more like a CONGRATULATIONS "CONFERENCE" and not a Questions from the Press Conference.
I note at least 3 microphones on the table, but maybe a few Local press papers, just got invited to photo document the Honours given
to Elvis, including the Gold Awards, do we have any AUDIO OF THIS EVENT ??? ANYONE ???

I'M NOT NOW AS SURE OF THE TIME ??? I seem to have different times given from Between Shows (he does have plenty of time then)
To after the final Show. Need to dig a little deeper..... (can anyone give any extra info on Kings Court??)

I also have a problem about the Outfit Elvis arrives at the Airport in!!!
Maybe the Sleeveless jacket is the same but the Shirt is a Different Colour???
Did he use the same outfit again later for the Astrodome Conference?
He did wear the Blue Fringed Jacket on at least two seperate occasions in Houston,
so the Red Shirt being worn on 2 different days is possible,
also the Red Shirt Press Conference - which I regard as a long conference,
but not a very brief conference as mentioned at the Airport.

Which makes me wonder if One or Two reporters with mic's or just Notepads managed to
catch Elvis walking through the corridors of the Airport Terminal to his car,
and thats all they got for the next morning papers, which has later been confused as THE Press Conference.
Hummm.... Still thinking, still checking..
- so if I find more or better info, will come back about this later.. REX

This looks and feels more like the second part of the 69 special, up close and personal -what does everyone think?
