Busy day today.......

1897 - British police arrest George Smith for drunken driving. It was the first DWI.

1924 - Leopold and Loeb were found guilty of murdering a small boy. The case is known as the first "thrill kill."

1939 - Canada declared war on Germany.

1953 - Swanson began selling its first "TV dinner."

1955 - "Gunsmoke" premiered on CBS.

1956 - Record stores were swamped with requests for Elvis' "Love Me Tender" which had not been released yet.

1977 - Elvis Presley's album "Moody Blue" #3 in the U.K.

1977 - Elvis Presley's album "Blue Hawaii" hit #26 in the U.K.

1978 - A 10-day Elvis Presley convention ended at the Las Vegas Hilton Hotel. (I am going to guess that it ended because it was the 10th day)

1995 - A plane with a skydivers club aboard crashed in Shacklesford, VA, killing 10 parachutists, the pilot, and a man on the ground. (Begs the question - why didn't the skydivers jump out??)

2003 - Sweden's Foreign Minister Anna Lindh was stabbed while shopping in a department store. She died the next day from her wounds.

1297 - Scotsman William Wallace defeated the English forces of Sir Hugh de Cressingham at the Battle of Stirling Bridge.

1941 - Charles A. Lindbergh brought on charges of anti-Semitism with a speech in which he blamed "the British, the Jewish and the Roosevelt administration" for trying to draw the United States into World War II.

1959 - The U.S. Congress passed a bill authorizing the creation of food stamps.

1963 - Filming finished on the Elvis Presley movie "Viva Las Vegas." Filming had begun on July 15.

1968 - "Variety" announced that the bordello scene from the 1968 TV Special "Elvis" had been cut. It was cited that the scene had passed NBC censors but the sponsor singer had requested that it be removed.

1971 - The Elvis Presley boxed compilation "World Wide Gold Award Hits, Vol. 2" hit #120 in the U.S.

1992 - Hurricane Iniki struck Hawaii. The storm damaged or destroyed over 10,000 homes and killed at least 5 people.

1974 - "Little House On The Prairie" made its television debut.

2000 - The Elvis Presley movie "Viva Las Vegas" was released on DVD.

2001 - The Elvis Presley CD compilation album "The 50 Greatest Love Songs" was released.

2001 - In the U.S., four airliners were hijacked and were intentionally crashed. Two airliners hit the World Trade Center, which collapsed shortly after, in New York City, NY. One airliner hit the Pentagon in Washington, DC. Another airliner crashed into a field in Pennsylvania. About 3,000 people were killed.

2002 - Nick Nolte was arrested for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. He was released later in the day on $2,500 bail.

2003 - Sweden's Foreign Minister Anna Lindh died from stab wounds inflicted by an unknown assailant the previous day.

1873 - The first practical typewriter was sold to customers.

1922 - The Episcopal Church removed the word "Obey" from the bride's section of wedding vows.

1948 - Elvis Presley, age 13, moved with his parents to Memphis, TN.

1960 - Elvis Presley and Juliet Prowse attended a special showing of "G.I. Blues" for theater owners. Prowse was his co-star in the movie.

1962 - Production began on the Elvis Presley film "Easy Come, Easy Go."

1977 - The Elvis Presley single "Way Down" was certified gold by the RIAA.

1980 - An in-depth report on the death of Elvis Presley aired on ABC-TV’s "20/20". It raised so many unanswered questions that the official case concerning Elvis’ death was reopened.

1994 - Frank Corder was killed when he crashed a stolen, single-engine Cessna on the South Lawn of the White House.

1995 - Two Americans were killed when their hydrogen balloon was shot down by the Belarussian military during an international race.

2000 - The Elvis Presley boxed set "Peace in the Valley - The Complete Gospel Recordings" was released.

1898 - Hannibal Williston Goodwin patented celluloid photographic film, which is used to make movies.

1948 - Elvis Presley enrolled at L.C. Humes High School in Memphis, TN.

1962 - Location shooting for Elvis Presley's movie "It Happened At The World's Fair" finished.

1971 - The World Hockey Association was formed.

1977 - The first diesel automobiles were introduced by General Motors. (thus allowing us the joy of driving behind them and inhaling their fumes)

1981 - U.S. Secretary of State Alexander M. Haig said the U.S. had physical evidence that Russia and its allies used poisonous biological weapons in Laos, Cambodia and Afghanistan.

1994 - U.S. President Bill Clinton signed a $30 billion crime bill into law. (is this more spending?)

1999 - At least 118 people were killed when a bomb exploded in Moscow, Russia.

2001 - U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell named Osama bin Laden as the prime suspect in the terror attacks on the United States on September 11, 2001. Limited commercial flights resumed in the U.S. for the first time in two days

1927 - Isadora Duncan died when her scarf became entangled in the wheel of her car. (that had to hurt)

1957 - Elvis Presley's single "Paralyzed" hit #8 in the U.K.

1965 - "My Mother The Car" premiered on NBC TV. The series was canceled after only a few weeks after the debut.

1972 - "The Waltons" premiered on CBS-TV.

1978 - "Mork & Mindy" premiered on ABC-TV.

1982 - Princess Grace of Monaco died at the age of 52 because of injuries she suffered the day before in a car crash. She was formerly actress Grace Kelly.

1984 - Joe Kittinger became the first person to fly a balloon solo across the Atlantic Ocean.(is there a washroom on a balloon?)

1998 - Jaime Jarrin received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. (my bad - no idea who this is)

2004 - The Elvis Presley CD "Good Rockin' Tonight" was released in the U.S.

1935 - The Nuremberg Laws were enacted by Nazi Germany. The act stripped all German Jews of their civil rights and the swastika was made the official symbol of Nazi Germany.

1940 - The German Luftwaffe suffered the loss of 185 planes in the Battle of Britain. The change in tide forced Hitler to abandon his plans for invading Britain.

1963 - Elvis Presley received the songs that director Gene Nelson and musical director Fred Karger had chosen for "Kissin' Cousins."

1967 - Elvis Presley's single "There's Always Me" hit #56 in the U.S.

1972 - The "New Musical Express" reported that "Elvis Says No To Britain." Colonel Parker had cited unsuitable venues as the reason.

2003 - Elvis Presley's estate closed Elvis Presley's Memphis restaurant-nightclub. The venture had been open for six years.

1830 - The "Tom Thumb", the first locomotive built in America, raced a horse on a nine-mile course. The horse won when the locomotive had some mechanical difficulties.

1850 - The Fugitive Slave Act was declared by the U.S. Congress. The act allowed slave owners to claim slaves that had escaped into other states.

1895 - Daniel David Palmer gave the first chiropractic adjustment. (and look how far they've come now)

1955 - The "Ed Sullivan Show" began on CBS-TV. The show had been "The Toast of the Town" since 1948.

1957 - Hank "Sugarfoot" Garland signed up to be Elvis Presley's guitar player.(not that familiar with the name - so guessing he didn't stick around long)

1965 - The first episode of "I Dream of Jeannie" was shown on NBC-TV. The last show was televised on September 1, 1970.

1998 - 18 people, including adults and children, were massacred by gunmen in el Sauzal, Mexico. The victims were lined up in firing squad style after being dragged from their beds.

2003 - Robert Duvall received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

2005 - The TV mini-series "Elvis" received nominations in six categories for the 57th Annual Emmy Awards. The categories included Outstanding Casting For A Miniseries, Movie Or A Special, Outstanding Lead Actor (Jonathan Rhys Meyers), Outstanding Supporting Actor (Randy Quaid), and Outstanding Supporting Actress (Camryn Manheim).

1949 - Elvis Presley and his family were accepted into the Memphis Housing Authority property called Lauderdale Courts. On November 17, 1952, they were evicted because they made too much money.

1958 - Martin Luther King Jr. was stabbed in the chest at a New York City department store by an apparently deranged black woman.

1980 - The eight-album boxed set "Elvis Aron Presley" hit #27 in the U.S.

1984 - "The Cosby Show" premiered on NBC-TV.

1985 - A second major earthquake hit Mexico City.

1989 - The wreckage of a DC-10 belonging to the French airliner UTA was found in Niger. The plane disappeared on September 19 with 171 passengers onboard. The Paris-bound plane was believed to have been brought down by a bomb.

1991 - U.N. weapons inspectors left for Iraq in a renewed search for Iraqi weapons of mass destruction.

1999 - Raisa Gorbachev, wife of former Soviet President Mikhail Gorvachev, died of leukemia.

1792 - The French National Convention voted to abolish the monarchy.(sorry kingy - that had to hurt)

1893 - Frank Duryea took what is believed to be the first gasoline- powered automobile for a test drive. The "horseless carriage" was designed by Frank and Charles Duryea. (the price of gas went up 5 cents the next day)

1897 - The New York Sun ran the "Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus" editorial. It was in response to a letter from 8-year-old Virginia O'Hanlon.

1931 - Britain went off the gold standard. ???? - so they downgraded to silver???

1949 - Communist leaders proclaimed The People's Republic of China.

1953 - Elvis Presley returned to Precision Tool where he operated a drill press for $1.55 an hour.

1957 - Bill Black and Scotty Moore quit over salary disputes with Colonel Parker. Black did work on three more sessions with Elvis Presley in 1958.

1961 - Antonio Abertondo swam the English Channel (in both directions) in 24 hours and 25 minutes.

1964 - Malta gained independence from Britain.

1981 - Belize gained full independence from Great Britain. (wow, your losing them left right and centre)

1996 - John F. Kennedy Jr. married Carolyn Bessette in a secret ceremony on Cumberland Island, GA.

1998 - The videotaped grand jury statement that U.S. President Bill Clinton made concerning the Monica Lewinsky case was made public.

1828 - Shaka, the African ruler and founder of the Zulu kingdom, was murdered by his half-brother Dingane. Shaka's mental illness had begun to compromise his leadership. (so then it was a good thing???)

1862 - U.S. President Lincoln issued the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation. It stated that all slaves held within rebel states would be free as of January 1, 1863.

1903 - Italo Marchiony was granted a patent for the ice cream cone. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/woohoo.gif)

1914 - Three British cruisers were sunk by one German submarine in the North Sea. 1,400 British sailors were killed. This event alerted the British to the effectiveness of the submarine. (that may be an understatement)

1955 - Commercial television began in Great Britain. The rules said that only six minutes of ads were allowed each hour and there was no Sunday morning TV permitted. (bet you are missing those days)

1958 - Elvis Presley left for Bremerhaven for a tour of duty in Germany. The ship was the U.S.S. Randall.
1961 - U.S. President John F. Kennedy signed a congressional act that established the Peace Corps.

1964 - "The Man From U.N.C.L.E." debuted on NBC-TV.

1980 - A border conflict between Iran and Iraq developed into a full-scale war.

1996 - Robert Dent, in Australia, became the first person to commit legally assisted suicide under a voluntary euthanasia law. Dent was suffering from terminal cancer.

63 B.C. - Caesar Augustus was born in Rome. (yeah caesar)

1779 - John Paul Jones, commander of the American warship Bon Homme, was quoted as saying "I have not yet begun to fight!"

1897 - The first recorded traffic fatality in Great Britain occurred. It happened 2 years before the first fatality in the U.S.

1961 - Elvis Presley's single "(Marie's The Name) His Latest Flame" hit #4 in the U.S.

1963 - Elvis Presley screened the movie "Hootenanny Hoot."

1986 - Japanese newspapers quoted Prime Minister Yasuhiro Nakasone as saying that minorities lowered the "intelligence level" of America.

1998 - Jamie Lee Curtis received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.(finally someone I know)

1999 - A 17-month-old girl fell 230 feet from the Capilano Suspension Bridge in North Vancouver, British Columbia. The girl had bruises but no broken limbs from the fall onto a rocky ledge. (she was later determined to be a witch and burned at the stake)

1999 - Siegfried & Roy received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.(score 2 that I know)

1999 - Jean-Claude Van Damme was arrested for drunk driving and driving without a license after he crashed his Mercedes-Benz into a restaurant. On July 10, 2000, Van Damme was given three years probation and fined $1,200.

1774 - John Chapman was born. He was better known as Johnny Appleseed. He planted orchards, befriended wild animals, and was considered at great medicine man by Native Americans.

1956 - The town of Tupelo, MS, declared "Elvis Presley Day."

1962 - "The Beverly Hillbillies" premiered on CBS-TV.

1964 - "Gilligan's Island" premiered on CBS-TV. The show aired for the last time on September 4, 1967.

1984 - Britain and China initialed a draft agreement on the future of Hong Kong when the Chinese take over ruling the British Colony.

1985 - Shamu was born at Sea World in Orlando, FL. Shamu was the first killer whale to survive being born in captivity.

1997 - In Indonesia, a Garuda Airlines Airbus crashed killing 234 people.

2000 - The Elvis Presley album "White Christmas" was released on CD.

2001 - In New York City, hundreds of people began the process of filing for death certificates for family members still missing in the ruins of the World Trade Center. At the time more than 6,300 people were still missing.

1939 - After 19 days of resistance, Warsaw, Poland, surrendered to the Germans after being invaded by the Nazis and the Soviet Union during World War II.

1957 - Elvis Presley played a benefit show at the annual Mississippi-Alabama Fair and Dairy Show. He was backed by Hank Garland and Bob Moore.

1960 - Elvis Presley's father, Vernon, visited him on the set of "G.I. Blues."

1969 - Elvis Presley's single "Clean Up Your Own Back Yard" hit #21 in the U.S.

1982 - Italian and French soldiers entered the Sabra and Chatilla refugee camps in Beirut. The move was made by the members of a multinational force due to hundreds of Palestinians being massacred by Christian militiamen.

1989 - Two men went over the 176-foot-high Niagara Falls in a barrel. Jeffrey Petkovich and Peter Debernardi were the first to ever survive the Horshoe Falls.

2001 - In Zug, Switzerland, an armed man killed 14 people and himself after entering the local parliament.

2004 - North Korean Vice Foreign Minister Choe Su Hon announced that North Korea had turned plutonium from 8,000 spent nuclear fuel rods into nuclear weapons. He also said that the weapons were to serve as a deterrent against increasing U.S. nuclear threats and to prevent nuclear war in northeast Asia. The U.S. State Department noted that the U.S. has repeatedly said that the U.S. has no plans to attack North Korea.

48 B.C. - Pompey the Great was murdered on the orders of King Ptolemy of Egypt. (whilst Pompey the Okay was left alone)

1066 - England was invaded by William the Conqueror who claimed the English throne. (hence the 'conqueror' title)

1850 - The U.S. Navy abolished flogging as a form of punishment. (in lieu of insults - ouch)

1950 - The United Nations admitted Indonesia.

1978 - Don Sherman, editor of Car & Driver, set a new Class E record in Utah. Driving the Mazda RX7 he reached a speed of 183.904 mph.(unfortunately he was driving in a school zone at the time and has lost his license as a result)

1991 - In response to U.S. President Bush's reduction of U.S. nuclear arms Soviet President Mikhail S. Gorbachev promised to reciprocate.(but did he?)

1993 - The Elvis Presley compilation boxed CD-set "From Nashville To Memphis - The Essential '60s Masters 1" was released.

1994 - 900 people were killed when an Estonian ferry capsized in the Baltic Sea.

2004 - Nate Olive and Sarah Jones arrived at the U.S.-Mexico border to complete the first known continuous hike of the 1,800-mile trail down the U.S. Pacific Coast. They started the trek on June 8.(by the time it was completed they had collected over 5000 pop cans and 1000 beer bottles)

2009 - At least 157 demonstrators were killed in a clash with the Guinean military.

1836 - Charles Darwin returned to England after 5 years of acquiring knowledge around the world about fauna, flora, wildlife and geology. He used the information to develop his "theory of evolution" which he unveiled in his 1859 book entitled The Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection.
1940 - During World War II, the HMS Empress was sunk while carrying child refugees from Britain to Canada.

1944 - The Nazis crushed the Warsaw Uprising.

1947 - The Federatino Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) formally established Formula One racing in Grand Prix competition.

1950 - "Peanuts," the comic strip created by Charles M. Schulz, was published for the first time in seven newspapers.

1955 - "Alfred Hitchcock Presents" debuted on CBS-TV.

1959 - "The Twilight Zone" debuted on CBS-TV. The show ran for 5 years for a total of 154 episodes.

1931 - The comic strip "Dick Tracy" made its debut in the Detroit Daily Mirror. The strip was created by Chester Gould.

1957 - The Soviet Union launched Sputnik I into orbit around the Earth. Sputnik was the first manmade satellite to enter space. Sputnik I fell out of orbit on January 4, 1958.

1958 - British Overseas Airways Corporation became the first jetliner to offer trans-Atlantic service to passengers with flights between London, England and New York.

1960 - Shooting for the Elvis Presley film "Flaming Star" wrapped up.

1968 - Elvis Presley recorded "Stay Away" and "Goin' Home."

1985 - The Shiite Muslim group Islamic Jihad announced that they had killed American hostage William Buckley. Later another American hostage said that he believed that Buckley had died four months earlier from torture.

2001 - A Russian airliner blew up as it flew over the Black Sea. There were no survivors of the 76 people on the plane. U.S. intelligence sources stated that they likely cause of the accident was a missile strike from a Ukrainian military exercise. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/oops.gif)

2005 - Sony BMG Strategic Marketing Group released "Hit Story." The three CD set contained 80 Elvis Presley chart hits.

1536 - Anglican priest William Tyndale was captured at Antwerp where he was strangled and burnt. He is credited with making the first English translation of the Bible. (that had to hurt)

1866 - The Reno Brothers pulled the first train robbery in America near Seymour, IN. The got away with $10,000. (still a good haul today)

1889 - In Paris, the Moulin Rouge opened its doors to the public for the first time. (oo lah lah)

1954 - E.L. Lyon became the first male nurse for the U.S. Army.

1974 - Elvis Presley gave a matinee and an evening concert in Dayton, OH. Parts of the matinee show were released on the album "A Profile - The King On Stage Vol. 2" and the evening show was used on "Breathing Out Fire."

1986 - A Soviet nuclear submarine sank in the Atlantic Ocean about 1,200 miles from New York. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/oops.gif)

1991 - Elizabeth Taylor married Larry Fortensky. The ceremony was held at Michael Jackson's estate near Los Angeles, CA. It was Taylor's 8th marriage and Fortensky's 3rd.

1957 - RCA Victor announced that they had already received 500,000 advance orders for Elvis' Christmas album.

1960 - Elvis Presley went into the recording studio to re-record the song "Flaming Star."

1961 - Elvis Presley's single "Little Sister" hit #5 in the U.S.

1977 - The album "From Elvis Presley Boulevard, Memphis, Tennessee" was confirmed gold by the RIAA.

2000 - Vojislav Kostunica took the oath of office as Yugoslavia's first popularly elected president.

2003 - In California, Arnold Schwarzenegger was elected governor in the recall election of Governor Gray Davis.

2003 - Randy Quaid received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

2003 - The ablum "Elvis 2nd To None" was released.

2004 - Billy Bob Thornton got a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
