QUOTE (colonel snow @ Dec 29 2010, 09:09 PM) *
Did Irvin Berlin refuse the royalties he got from Elvis' sales for White Christmas? I think he got more than from other performers except Bing Crosby.colonel snow. I guess the info on royalty cheques is personal information, but it would be nice to have the info on these payments for Elvis released songs, that are over 50 years old now. Thanks Colonel Snow..

Thankyou also PHYLLIS and CHRIS...

1957 - October

ELVIS 1957 “XMAS OUTRAGE”

(IMG:http://www.elvis-tkc.com/forums/uploads/1293634123/gallery_21960_29_302016.jpg)

Elvis' personal Xmas Album, which he had with him in Germany,

and was shipped back in his personal trunk (later framed-see below also)

When Dick Wittinghill received requests to play songs from Elvis' 1957 Christmas album, he refused saying that "it's like having Tempest Storm give Christmas gifts to my kids."

Al Pritty, on playing a song over the air, was fired for it because, according to the station manager, the album was in extremely bad taste.

Almost all Canadian radio stations banned the album.

Others dared to play the album. Allen Brooks was one and many people liked it, especially Santa Claus Is Back In Town.

The song is outrageous to begin with, and Elvis plays it to its fullest potential in a brilliant and flaring performance.

No one thought Christmas could be like this.

Letter confirming this is Elvis' own Album... EPE sold it at the Vegas "Guernseys" Elvis Auction in 1999

Elvis Presley - Elvis' Christmas Album (1957) (by Brian W. Fairbanks)

One of the few rock and roll Christmas albums I can stomach. Elvis' Christmas Album was recorded in the heat of summer 1957 and was regarded as an act of blasphemy upon its release later in the year

How dare this duck tailed R 'n' R with his pink Cadillacs and sexually suggestive performing style...this pelvis thrusting pied piper of indecency...this...this...multi-millionaire juvenile delinquent, record "White Christmas"?

Even the song's composer. Irving Berlin, was upset and asked radio stations not to play Presley's version.

There are moments on this disc when the King seems to playfully mock the sentiments of some of these songs as if to taunt his critics, but for the most part he sounds sincere and never fails to be anything but superb.

He breathes startling new life into "Oh Little Town of Bethlehem" and makes "I'll Be Home for Christmas" his own. "Here Comes Santa Claus (Right Down Santa Claus Lane)" is delightful, and "Santa Claus is Back in Town" is as raunchy in its way as his recording of "One Night"

The album is padded out with four sublime gospel recordings originally released on the Peace in the Valley EP that break the light hearted mood a bit, but also place the focus on the season's true meaning.

This is a true classic........

INTERVIEW with LEIBER & STOLLER

You and Jerry wrote a holiday song for Elvis, "Santa Claus is Back in Town."

We were at the session.

We wrote it in the hallway between takes on something else. [laughs]

They needed another holiday song. It was spur of the moment.

GOLDMINE: It's one of the more pure blues songs Elvis recorded.

Yeah, and it's a little risque.

Obviously RCA Victor didn't catch on to the fact that "Santa Claus is coming down your chimney tonight" didn't really refer to a chimney. laughs]

1958 Elvis Sails
1958 Christmas With Elvis (no Billboard Charting in 1958 ~ probably very low sales!)

In 1957 Elvis had so many releases out Singles, and EPs, really fitting in AN "ELVIS XMAS SINGLE" was impossible

In 1958 However, Elvis had 1 & 2 with both King Creole EPs.... Looking at other Xmas releases...

Elvis would have easily made the Top 10 with something like Blue Xmas ~ Santa Claus is back in Town... he would have got the Radio Plays, and Juke Box space for the single.

RCA and the Colonel don't even promote the 1957 Xmas album in 1958... like it was almost forgotten with Elvis in the Army!

When released in Canada - Granny bought this for Mom & Dad as a joke given all the hype about his 'bad' influence
