I would think more along the lines of "Old McDonald" stuff like
that. Danny Boy, and the others you have mentioned Curtis are actually pretty good in my book. Imo. |

I guess this is again a matter of personal tastes, but I can't see nothing "odd" in Elvis' version of Danny Boy.
I happen to like the song very much, and I think it's one of Elvis' finest vocal performances. And the live version of the song on Tuscon '76 (FTD) is just as good, if not even better than the studio master. |

Have to say that i agree. I find Elvis' version strong and powerful and by no means "odd". Also like The last farewell and Solitaire for that matter.
Odd songs...really can't think of any. The odd songs from the movies, were..well for the movies....though how Old Macdonald originally fitted into Double Trouble does have me wondering a little (IMG:http://elvis-tkc.com/forum2/style_emoticons/default/LSHIC.gif) -------------------- |

First I was thinking OLD songs???
But then I opend my eyes and saw ODD songs... Ok Odd songs, in the beginging in the 50's Elvis had od songs, songs with no lyrics or lyrics that don't mean much. But They are not odd songs they have something special. The movie years.....like chris said if you see it in his concept the songs are good, yes also "colombus thought the world was flat"..... (IMG:http://elvis-tkc.com/forum2/style_emoticons/default/LSHIC.gif) And in the 70's...there was never a odd song maybe only for littel darling, but hey the lyrics where damm good.... (IMG:http://elvis-tkc.com/forum2/style_emoticons/default/LSHIC.gif) (IMG:http://elvis-tkc.com/forum2/style_emoticons/default/wacko.gif) So, odd songs.....nha not really (IMG:http://elvis-tkc.com/forum2/style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) -------------------- |

can't think of any honestly.
If you were a non-fan i'd punch you for saying that The Last Frewell, Danny Boy and Solitaire are "odd" (IMG:http://elvis-tkc.com/forum2/style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif) -------------------- I'd rather go on hearing your lies....than smell your armpits son

I believe it also depends on what meaning you give to the word "odd". If it means songs you have never expected Elvis to record them, then there are a few to mention. "The Last Farewell" for example. In my opinion it doesn't automaticly means it's a bad choice by Elvis. The song turned out well and Elvis delivered a very delicate version.
What I found an "odd" song when I first heard it was "Life". Especially when you realize it was recorded in 1970, it was way ahead its time. -------------------- "Life's a paradox! That's two doxes!" (Elvis on June 19th, 1977)

No Elvis songs are odd to me.I must admit that before I heard Elvis
sing certain songs,I didn't think they would suit him,but everytime his proved me wrong.Mind you I'm talking about when I was younger and not now. TCE Lorraine -------------------- See How They Shine,Oh If You Need A Friend,I'm Sailing Right Behind

TCE Lorraine Simply because, whatever the song. Elvis always made it his own. Even when you talk about Old Macdonald etc. He was probably the only artist in history who could have pulled that off. No, its not a favourite. Of mine or Elvis' either. But, for what material he sometimes had to go with, he did an exceptional job. I have to say that i agree with you Lorraine. Many years ago, before i had heard almost everything, i would read tracklistings of Elvis albums i didn't have, and be suprised at what was included. But, as soon as i had heard them, they became Elvis songs. I honestly can say, that out of the covers he sang, there isn't a single one where i don't prefer his version. -------------------- |

In this light...whenever i hear an Elvis cover, and then listen to the original artist singing the same song, most often, the 'original' would sound odd to me. This doesn't happen very often simply because i happen to listen to these originals purely by chance. But every time it happens i have to tell myself. Where's the passion?? it's sure difference...sound quite odd compared to our man's masterpiece. PS: The only exception so far is Hey Jude -------------------- I'd rather go on hearing your lies....than smell your armpits son

I'm the same Chris.I prefer all Elvis' cover versions better
than the originals.I even like Elvis' version of Hey Jude better than the Beatles, but then I'm not very keen on the Beatles. TCE Lorraine -------------------- See How They Shine,Oh If You Need A Friend,I'm Sailing Right Behind

Would even say that about Hey Jude. Many fans slam that, and i really can't see why. I do like the Beatles. But i still prefer Elvis' version to listen to.... (IMG:http://elvis-tkc.com/forum2/style_emoticons/default/notworthy.gif)

I agree with Gordon as far as Hey Jude is concerned...it needs the extra voices and the big production to do the song justice.
To be fair to Elvis though, wasn't the studio version just Elvis messing about with the song?? I dont think it was really meant for release was it.? The only other cover song on which I prefer the original artist is The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face, sung by Roberta Flack? I think. I would have loved to have heard Elvis sing it as a slow song like she does.. -------------------- |

I would have loved to have heard Elvis sing it as a slow song like she does.. Roberta Flacks version is great. George Michael has done a nice version, as has Celine Dion. But i would still rather listen to Elvis' version. Hey Jude wasn't done as a serious recording by Elvis as you say Steve. I'm not a lover of the song overall, i think its over-rated. Good start, then it just goes on forever (IMG:http://elvis-tkc.com/forum2/style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif) I wouldn't say that Elvis' version is better - but it is the one i would prefer to listen to.....no competition.
