Not a big fan or these type or releases, I have it, just for completeness, in this age of digital music and technology, I'm very big on sound quality a remastering, more for the money, just my opinion though, Al

Sweet Leilani
Harry Owens wrote the song on 20-10-34 (a day after the birth of his daughter); it seems that he has recorded the song in this time. The only recording I found was on V disc 379 and these recordings were produced for allied soldiers in WW2 and after the war during 1942-1949. I have no more information about recording dates or label. I know that the song is released in later years by him but this can be a re-recording(?). Dick McIntyre's Harmony Hawaiians with vocal Danny Kua'ana recorded the song on 23-07-36 (Decca 945); I think that this the original. Afterwards recorded by 19-02-37 - Ted Fio Rito & his Orchestra with vocal The Debutants & Muzzy Marcellino (Decca 1176); 21-02-37 - Jan Garber & his Orchestra (Brunswick 7839); 03-03-37 - Tommy Tucker & his Orchestra (Vocalion 3489 / Conqueror 8805 / Melotone 7-05-17 / Perfect 7-05-17); 12-03-37 - Ruby Newman & his Rainbow Room Orchestra with vocal Ray Heatherton (Victor 25543); 22-03-37 - Roy Fox & his Orchestra with vocal Denny Dennis (UK – HMV BD 5194); 30-03-37 - Bob White & his Orchestra (Variety 548); 18-04-37 - Ambrose & his Orchestra with vocal Sam Browne (UK – Decca F 6385); 06-07-37 - Billy Cotton & his Band with vocal Alan Breeze (Rex 9078). Bing Crosby recorded the song 23-03-37 on Decca 1175/Decca 25011; this song was used for his movie Waikiki wedding from that year. on the backside of this record the song Blue Hawaii can be found. (see scan) In the UK the song was released on Brunswick 2443 with picture on the label. (see scan) The song was recorded by Roy Smeck in the 30's (Sonora 2026) but I have no more information. colonel snow

When the swallows come back to Capistrano
several sources give for an original recording 23-01-40 by Leon T. Rene (composer/songwriter). I have not found anything about this person as a recording artist. I doubt he recorded a version. The original version was recorded in april 1940 by Ceelle Burke's Orchestra with vocal by Ceelle Burke & The Rhythmettes(Ammor 111 / Exclusive 102 / Varsity 8313); his version on Decca 3173 was not released. Other versions were recorded by: 13-05-40 - The Ink Spots (Decca 3195); 16-05-40 - Ray Herbeck & his Music with Romance with vocal Ray Olsen (Vocalion 5568); 20-05-40 - Guy Lombardo's Royal Canadians (Decca 3213); 21-05-40 - Gene Krupa & his Orchestra (Columbia 35520); 22-05-40 - Larry Clinton and his Orchestra (Victor 26634); 27-05-40 - Xavier Cugat & his Waldorf Astoria Orchestra with Dinah Shore (Victor 26641); 28-05-40 - Tony Martin & Ray Sinatra Orchestra (Decca 3246); 29-05-40 - Dick Todd (Bluebird 10769); 04-06-40 - Jack Leonard (Okeh 5631); 13-06-40 - Glenn Miller Orchestra with vocal by Ray Eberle (Bluebird 10776); 24-06-40 - Bobby Byrne's Orchestra (Decca 3278); 00-06-40 - Marco Rosales (Varsity 8338); 28-08-40 - Gene Autry (Conqueror 9546 / Okeh 5780): 28-01-52 - Billie Ward & The Dominoes (Federal 12059) and a lot more will follow including in 1957 Pat Boone (Dot 15440). colonel snow

To be sure, the sound is less than perfect. However I like this release for a number of resons. Since Elvis sang these for himself in private, it lets us know the kind of musical interests he had. It sort of lets us see the "real Elvis" off the stage, out of the jumpsuits, and not in the studio. It lets us see a bit of what he really liked and perhaps, even where he was in his thoughts at that paritcular moment.

I agree with everything said M-M, this is a glimp in the private musical interest of Elvis.
The music he really cared for apart from his own recordings. We had some before on the 50 golden boxset, some on the BMG "Home recordings" and this one. There is also some more complete material available from Germay through various labels.. On all the quality is ranged from poor to excelent. But every singe song is a discovery. In the 80's (the dark ages) we would have killed for "new" Elvis-recordings. So the sound is no issue at all, it's very cherished. Thanks to Henk for providing the several sources by the originals. Moonlight sonata
The original version was recorded on 07-04-11 by Vessalla's Italian Band (Victor 31828) Re-recorded on 13-01-14 on Victor 35426 / Victor 68293. The first vocal version I discovered was recorded on 31-10-22 by Olive Kline but this recording is destroyed. She re-recorded the song on 29-12-22 (Victor 55194). colonel snow
