That's When Your Heartaches Begin WPA5 2532
Memphis Recording Service, Private Recording (Summer) 1953 Lyrics: If you find your sweetheart in the arms of a friend That's when your heartaches begin When dreams of a lifetime must come to an end That's when your heartaches begin Love is a thing you never can share When you bring a friend into your love affair That's the end of your sweetheart, that's the end of your friend That's when your heartaches begin Spoken: If you find your sweetheart in the arms of a friend That's that's when your heartaches begin And when dreams when dreams of a lifetime must all come to an end Yeah that's when your heartaches begin You see love is a thing that you never can share and when you bring a friend into your love affair that's the end. Musicians: Guitar Elvis Presley Alternate Versions: VPA4 5329 - December 4th 1956, Sun Studios Memphis, available on "The Complete Million Dollar Quartet" H2WB 0260-sp - January 13th 1957, RCA Radio Recorders, Hollywood, available on "Elvis's Golden Records" ------- Writen by William J Raskin, Billy Hill, Fred Fisher (1940) The Ink Spots made a succesful recording of this song in 1950 with Orville "Hoppy" Jones (bass) providing the spoken interlude. During the million dollar quartet Elvis tells his fellows about this record and how he lost the dubs and goes on to express how he would like to hear it sung right with "a real deep voice talkin' it off [and] I think it would sell." It's intersting then that just over a month later he records it formally for RCA, sung properly but without that real deep voice. The MDQ version assumes a fine middle position between the raw and nervous original rendition and this later more polished and perhaps sanitized version. -------------------- |

I'd love it if someone here could tell the story of how/where/when the acetate of his original recording of this song was discovered, and indeed the same for the MDQ tape.

The original version was recorded 03-06-37 by Shep Fields & his Rippling Rhythm Orchestra; the Ink Spots recorded their version on 23-12-40.
This version was re-released in 1951 and it may be that this track influenced Elvis. colonel snow -------------------- |

Elvis used "That's When Your Heartaches Begin" in some of his shows in 1957. Parts of the song can be heard during Red Robinsons recording for his radio report from Vancouver Aug. 31 1957, and you can also hear parts of the song during the radio program "Man Or Menace" from Elvis' Show in Detroit, March 31 1957.
