During the concert years many, many and again, many, hours of both silent and/or with sound 8mm material was shot by fans. Although at times difficult to watch because of various quality these audience films fill in a great piece of the live Elvis 1969 - 1977 puzzle. They fill in the blanks between the various officially filmed concerts and let you see the Elvis Presley show from an audience's member perspective. This is how the Elvis Presley show was while not being orchestrated by a director, this is how Elvis Presley was while not being orchestrated by a director or hindered by camera's.

Some really interesting things have seen the light of day over the last decades. Things we normaly wouldn't have seen. It would be great if some of these films would be released (either official or on bootleg) while transfered from a 1st generation copy.

In this topic I will once or twice a week post some of these 8mm films (taken from Youtube sources). It's my intention to have friendly discussions about the footage, the show in question, Elvis himself or any other things related. I hope you will, even though they aren't of great quality, enjoy these films and will take part in discussing them. Footage won't be shown in chronological order !

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The 1st video I'd like to share is filmed during the August 17th 1972 dinner show and filmed are parts of 'My Way', 'An American Trilogy' and 'Can't Help Falling In Love'.

The footage is a bit dark, but otherwise quite clear (Elvis's facial expressions can be clearly seen). Elvis is wearing one of his 3-piece suits and on film they look even more impressive than on pictures.

Enjoy !

Great choice Stefan. I do wish he would have keept those two piece outfits, They would have been a better choice than many of the not so good looking jumpsuits that came later.

As for the footage it's not that bad, the lightning is not the best, but that is not the camera mans fault. Elvis in great shape and voice.

Yeah, would have liked him to keep those suits also Einar as they really look amazing and stylish. Would have loved to see more from this concert is this quality. As you've already said Elvis is in great shape and voice !

There's some great footage out there and there is tons of it. This topic gives me a reason to plough trough youtube and share the best with ya'll on this forum. For me it was also the 1st time I saw this particular footage and as a 70's fan I was also blown away by it. Too bad it's quite short, but the quality in this case makes up for that.

Notice that Elvis doesn't wear a belt anymore in the footage, a habit he developed trough 1972 which lasted through part of 1973. Most likely he wore the Gold Attendance belt with this outfit, but it also might have been one of his macreme belts.

This is another great topic Stefan. I look forward to seeing some more cool clips.

Thanks for that last one- it was great and also gave me goosebumps.
And I agree that the two piece looks even more amazing in the footage than on just photos. He really suited that look

It's always difficult to say with these suits if pictures are from a certain show. In fact, I'm not even sure which suit he is wearing in the footage due to the lightning. Elvis had several different suits like the one featured in the footage and the lining of the cape and pocket flaps seem to be green. But as a picture below demonstrates it's also possible he wore the blue version, which at times seem green due to the lightning.

White 3-piece suit with blue pockets and blue cape

Notice how the lining of the cape seems green, just like in the footage above !

I'm leanig towards the blue version on the footage above myself. Your picture does indeed seem to show the same shirt (as can also been seen in the picture above), so many thanks for sharing !

Today some new 8mm footage !

The first is a trailer made by 'ahm1977' and uploaded on January 11th 2008. It shows, very good quality, footage of Elvis on stage in Jan/Feb 1970. Since footage from that engagement is quite rare this was/is a great upload ! Enjoy !

We're staying in Vegas, but we flashforward to August 1975. Elvis cut the engagement shor after only 5 shows due to health issues. Here we have 23+ minutes in very good quality fom the August 19th 1975 dinner show (2nd show of the engagement). Surprisingly Elvis is actually quite active on stage and delivers a great, entertaining show.

- point of interest: notice how Elvis first lies down on stage before starting to sing See See Rider !

QUOTE
Setlist August 19th 1975 dinner show: 2001 Theme / See See Rider / I Got A Woman - Amen / Blue Suede Shoes / If You Love Me (Let Me Know) / It's Now Or Never / My Boy / Love Me / Loving You / Suspicious Minds (last live version) / Introductions / T.R.O.U.B.L.E / Why me Lord / How Great Thou Art / Let Me Be There / Crying In The Chappel / Can't Help Falling In Love / Closing vamp

Again, still staying in vegas for now, we have almost 42 minutes of Elvis on stage on December 3rd 1976 during the dinner show. This is very good footage (nice view on the stage). As mentioned many times before, Elvis's shows at the start of this Vegas season were very solid and this footage proves that again. Judge for yourself ! (uploaded by 'Tomek M' on June 17th 2011)

Setlist December 3rd 1976 dinner show: 2001 Theme / See See Rider / I Got A Woman - Amen / Love Me / If You Love Me (Let Me Know) / You Gave Me A Mountain / It's Now Or Never / One Night / All Shook Up / Teddy Bear - Don't Be Cruel / And I Love You So / Fever / Polk Salad Annie / Introductions / Hurt (with reprise) / Hound Dog / Blue Christmas / Can't Help Falling In Love / Closing Vamp

And lastly, again Vegas, the almost complete December 4th 1976 dinner show. As a 70's fan it's very interesting to compare these 2 1976 shows (only 1 show in between). This 2nd show is definatley the better of the 2 and very intersting to watch ! (uploaded by 'ElvisDayByDay' on December 3rd 2010)

Yes, that 1970 footage is brilliant ! I wish there was more if it !

The 1975 footage is quite interesting also and the quality is actually good. Something interesting things can be seen like, as mentioned before, Elvis lying down before starting See See Rider, Elvis throwing his guitar to Charlie after the 'Amen' part and ending the song without it and then Elvis signaling Charlie to give his guitar back and making the usual moves with his guitar to the drum beats and then we get the final throw to Charlie and Elvis sitting down on stage and then giving away the chains from his belt (!).

The 1976 footage is intersting also. Elvis is less energetic than in 1975, but seeing those concerts almost complete is amazing. Both concerts have very different setlists which is nice too. Great versions of You Gave Me A Mountain, One Night, Polk Salad Annie, Blue Christmas (with Elvis on guitar), Trying To Get To You, America, Bridge Over Troubled Water, the spoken version of What Now My Love and a great How Great Thou Art where Elvis drops to one knee at the conclusion ! Watching these on Youtube while making them bigger (not full screen) adds to the enjoyment.

Real cool stuff, Stefan. Always cool to see EP in action.

There's surprisingly alot very good quality footage out there - some are even so clear you can clearly see Elvis' facial features which is important (for me) when it comes to amateur footage. If you can make out Elvis' face in the footage, it means it's good quality and well worth viewing. On many clips Elvis is just a blur or kinda "ghostly" - it's not as fun to watch that sort of stuff, although I admit there are exceptions to that as well. Something like the Astrodome footage (be it from '70 or '74) is super nice 'as is' - just so different and it's cool to see how big it actually was and how 'alone' Elvis was on the stage.

There's a great moment in the clip at around 2min mark when they drive by the filmer - super nice close-up shot for few seconds.

Here's also the famous Kansas City '74 footage filmed by none other than Rex Martin. The picture ratio seems just a slight bit off (more than likely the uploaders fault) but it's really good quality and definitely worth watching more than once.

Yeah, that Kansas City footage is absolutely great ! The great thing is also that we have a soundboard from that concert which I heard many times before seeing the footage. It's actually cool to then finally 'see what you hear' ....

I can enjoy, personally, most 8mm footage with few exceptions, but I can see your point ... when Elvis isn't even recognisable it's not worth viewing.

Another great topic Stefan.
This kind of footage takes me back to when I had a lot of it on VHS videotape in the late 80's..but not in the kind of clarity its available in now, and certainly not with the correct audio.
This kind of footage is always great to watch because for me, it's the real Elvis we're seeing, like you say with no director or being conscious of cameras everywhere he could really be more relaxed on stage.
Fans often moan about the clarity or sound quality but I always think at least these shows were filmed, that's what's important.

The part that I highlighted sums it up perfectly (IMG:style_emoticons/default/notworthy.gif)

Those 8mm films let's you actually see the concert trough the eyes of someone in de audience. The only thing it can't do is capture the actual 'vibe' of being there. I find it interesting to see Elvis 'normal' stage movements, the interaction with the crowd, interaction with members of the band, the ususal lightning used etc etc. None of the official filmed concerts could capture that !

Looking at the december 1976 Vegas footage I can actually see why people, as late as 1976 and even 1977, gave the shows good reviews. Both are filmed from the balcony which gives a good view on the stage and therefore let's you see things that you would also have seen had you been there (instead of seeing Elvis 99% of the time close up). things that would have drawn your attention like bandmembers or fans surroundig you. The shows come across (and they are good shows) very differently than listening to them as audience recordings alone.
