Hi Everyone. I am quite new to this board and the reason I joined was because I saw part of this forum devoted to Elvis lps. I am am long time collector of Elvis vinyl and even though I have numerous Elvis cds, my passion is collecting vinyl, particularly boxed sets. So I thought a thread showcasing some boxed sets would be fun. There was actually a thread about this but I thought I would start another. I am also new to uploading images to message boards so if my pictures go through I will provide some info about the boxed set pictured. Cheers,

Hi again. I see the pictures uploaded just fine. Thus, here is some info on this set. This is a set of 5 picture disc 12 inch records released in Italy in approximately 1993. From opened copies of this set that I have owned in the past I can tell you that the five picture discs come in a die cut cardboard sleeve. The sleeve is just like the Italian lp cover for that record but with a die cut. There is also a small square paper insert included inside each die cut cover. This set was limited to between 750 and 1000 copies and could only be purchased through "Raro" magazine, which is an Italian music magazine. That magazine had advertisements of this set inside issues from that time and "Raro" were the exclusive distributors of the set. The sticker on the shrinkwrap on the box has Italian text on it.

Hi. This is a boxed set titled "Peace in the Valley". What is interesting about this set is that there were two versions of it. One version had the blue sticker on the shrinkwrap advertising the inclusion of the 10" "Ill be Home for Christmas" record. The other version did not have the sticker on the shrinkwrap or the 10" record inside. These are often referred to as the "Deluxe" version and the "Standard" version of this box set and they were reased 6 months apart in 2000.

This was the last Candelite Elvis box made in 1984 and only 500 got out before Candelite went bankrupt and closed their doors. There is also a neat 12 page booklet that comes with this box, the cover of which is the same as the box set.

Hi. Time Life released a couple of vinyl boxed sets of Elvis, the first in September of 1986 and the second in 1989. The 1986 set is the most common of the two; while the second set is more difficult to find. Was it the advent of the CD which led to declining vinyl sales? Was there lower production numbers for the 1989 versus the 1986 set? Regardless of the case, the boxes are must have Elvis sets, not for the music, but for the beautiful artwork.

P.S. I will add to this thread every couple of evenings.

Welcome Elvis Collector, interesting box sets there. I like vinyl myself but don't have any real rarities the only one which might qualify is the 64 Film Hits in a movie canister:

It was a 1985 RCA Germany limited edition, but I don't think it was too limited.

Posted by: Spider Murphy Jul 30 2008, 06:25 PM

An interesting topic. It's nice to hear some info. about those box sets. Well done.

Posted by: ElvisCollectorInCanada Jul 31 2008, 12:03 AM

That 64 Film Hits tin canister is a neat set. Its tough to find those without corrosion to the tin. Whoever came up with the idea for that set is pretty clever as its kind of like an intersection of film reels and the vinyl lp, very very cool.

Anyways, I will be posting a few more boxes and stories this evening. Enjoy,

The boxed set showcased in this posting is called "His Best Years 1954-1960: CompleteWorks". This set was released by the European Economic Community in 1987 and its a 12 lp box. A problem with this box is when you shake the box around, the records shift around inside. This is because, and I know this from opened copies I have seen, the records are not in paper sleeves. Rather, they are in flimsy plastc sleeves. As a result, the records shift around inside and often this seam splits the box. I really love the cover of this box because of the color of the text matches the colors used in the picture and I also like the use of vibrant colors.

Elvis "The Legend" is a 10lp boxed set released in 1983 in Germany. What's not to love about the cover of this box? The picture of Elvis in a powder blue jumpsuit from the spring of 1972 is a unique picture which I don't see often.

In 1979 Candelite records released a boxed set titled: "The Legendary Recordings of Elvis". There were two versions of the box, one was a deluxe version and the other was a standard version. The deluxe version was 7lps in size, burgandy in color and was made to look like a book with protruding corners among other things. Then there was a standard version with 6lps, 1 lp less than the deluxe version. The box color on the standard version is black and was a slipcase style like the "Memories of Elvis" and "Elvis Presley Story" boxes released in 1978 and 1977 respectively. Here is a picture of the standard version of "The Legendary Recordings of Elvis".

I am sure you are all familiar with an 8lp box released by RCA in 1980 titled "Elvis Aron Presley". A not so common version of this box is the "reviewer series" version released to industry executives before the commercial release of the box to the Elvis hungry public. The only variation between the two editions is the text on a little circular sticker on the backside of the box.

This is a box titled "Elvis The King of Rock 'n' Roll Volume 1" and this was a release of Denamrk sometime im the 80's (I believe). I don't have as much information on this set as I would like but I do know that its the first of three volumes. Each volume, including this one, has 3 lps.

Enjoy the pictures and infomration everyone, I will post more soon.

Another insertion into this thread is of the box "Artist of the Century". Did you know that there are four versions of this vinyl lp box? The most common is the black vinyl version, widely avaliable in North America upon its release in 1999. In that same year, three other versions of the box were released. There was a picture disc version and these were numbered. I have seen numbers over 3000 so they can be found. However, it gets much more difficult to find the red vinyl versions. I have no idea how many of the red versions were released but they were numbered also. The most difficult of all four is the blue vinyl version pictured below. There were 500 copies of this box made and every box comes with a sticker and number out of 500. I bought my set from a dealer in the U.K. who told me they used to bring blue vinyl copies to record concentions in the U.S. (because blue vinyl was plentiful in the U.K.) and trade for red vinyl copies (which were more plentiful in the U.S.) and bring them back to the U.K. I paid a good price for my blue copy from that dealer but I did get torched on shipping. Oh well, its worth it for the king.

Hi everyone. I have just one more note regarding those two Candelite boxes pictured above. Did you know that there are actually two variations of each box? Yes indeed and the difference is that boxes came with either:

(a) A sheet of paper listing the song titles in the set. This sheet of paper was placed between the shrinkwrap and the box on the backside.

(b) No sheet of paper.

I through this was an interesting tidbit on these sets.

Next up are 4 boxed sets that were all part of a series of sets released in Australia between 1980 and 1985. they are all titled "The Legend" but showcase Elvis recordings from different time periods in his career. Actually, the intent was to release all of Elvis's recordings in order of either release or recording. They made it up to songs of 1970 and then unfortunately the series ended. Volume 1 was released in 1980, Volume 2 in 1981, Volume 3 in 1982, and Volume 4 in 1985. Its unfortunate that they did not get past 1970. Here are pictures of the 4 sets.

Elvis "Collectors Gold" was a 3lp boxed set which came out of Germany in 1991. I remember walking into an HMV store here in my city at the time and examining the CD version. I remember seeing that one cd (which is also 1 lp in the set) was devoted to Elvis live in 1969. What made my jaw drop in the middle of that HMV store was when I saw a live version of "Rubbernicken" on the set (did I spell Rubbernicken correctly)? What? A live version from 1969? So of course,I had to have it and bought it.

Interestingly, there are two vinyl versions. The version pictured below is the most common one. The much tougher to obtain version has a sticker on the shrinkwrap with a number out of 10,000. I forget the story behind it but they were numbered. I did have a chance to pick up a sealed copy from another Canadian collector a few years ago but somebody beat me to it. Oh well, I will keep looking.

This is a great set and worth it for just the vegas material in my opinion. A nice piece of vinyl indeed.

I have..in the past..owned a couple of the sets you have posted. But, many are new to my eyes. Would love to see a bigger version of the first memories of Elvis boxset you posted.

Thanks for posting.......look forward to seeing more of your collection notworthy.gif

Hi NightRider, thanks for the note. I intend to post a number of additional boxed sets in this thread and maybe start other threads on Japanese lp covers and Canadian pressed lps. Vinyl is very dear to me and in this age of the CD I still focus on the vinyl. I don't know how to post a bigger version of any of the pictures I already posted, sorry about that.

Here are a couple of boxes of Elvis produced back in the 1970's titled "100 Super Rocks". The first version (with Aloha Elvis on the box cover) was produced in France in 1976. This set includes 7 12 x 24 posters of Elvis and 7lps.

The second version (with sculpted Elvis on the box cover) was produced in Germany in 1977 and includes a fold-out poster inside which pictures the box cover on one side and the song titles of the set on the other side. Again, the set includes 7lps.

Of the two sets my preference is for the France version. In fact, that set is one of my favourite Elvis boxed sets of all time because of the cover shot of Elvis in Hawaii, its just beautiful. And it goes without saying that the song selection rocks.

Some Elvis boxed sets were also released by Readers Digest. Here are a couple of the sets. The first, "His Greatest Hits" was released in 1983 with a yellow trim and yellow back cover. There was also one called "The Legend Lives On" which was released in 1986. Both sets have 7lps inside and booklets. I also believe that these were exclusively mail-order sets.

In addition to the two sets pictured, there is another version of "His Greatest Hits" which was released in 1990 with a white trim and white back cover. There was also an 8lp set from 1979 titled "His Greatest Hits" which is the toughest to find of all the Readers Digest Sets.

In 2000, a 5 lp boxed set of Elvis was released titled "That's The Way It Is: Special Edition". This set is a product of the EU and instead of the traditional "box", the contents are enclosed inside a 12x12 plastic case. Thus, the photo you see of Elvis rehearsing in Vegas is actually the first inner sleeve. The sticker is on the plastic casing by the way.

On April 15, 2003, Elvis: Top Album Collection Volumes 1 and 2 were released by the reissue Collectibles" label. Each set contains 5 lps pressed on 180g red vinyl. Both boxes are incredibly heavy and the records inside come sealed also.

Its unfortunate the more box sets like this of Elvis have not been released in recent years as all these 180g and 200g vinyl pressings that you see being released of various artists are targeted to a new generation of vinyl buyers. Sure, there are numerous lp releases of Elvis but I think more boxed sets would be nice.

These sets are nice!

Here is a boxed set of Elvis which was manufactured in Canada and sold over U.S. television in 1976. The set is titled elvis.gif A Collector's Edition" and consists of the reocrds: Elvis in Hollywood (1lp), Elvis Forever (2lps), and Elvis (2lps) for a total of 5 lps. There is also a 20 page booklet inside. Canada did not manufacture too many boxed sets of Elvis uniuque to our country but this is one of them and it really is a beautiful set, anotherone of my favourite worldwide sets of Elvis. I actually think this was the first box of Elvis that I ever obtained and I remember playing the heck out of it.

I recently learned that there is a second pressing of this box which was released in 1981 with some differences to the 1976 set with regard to the record company which produced it, text on the box and the color of it, serial number, and probably some other things which I will be able to verify once I get my hands on it so at some point I may be able to give you some more infomration on this one. Also, when the 1976 version was released it was also avaliable on 8-track in an lp sized box, just like in the picture below.

Hi everyone. I thought I would stop by and make an addition to this thread this evening. I thought I would post a picture of a really neat box of Elvis titled "Behind Closed Doors". This is a 4lp set that was released n 1979. This set includes outtakes from "Wild in the 'Country", "Blue Hawaii", "Kid Galahad", and "Paradise, Hawaiian Style". Then, the set moves into some live in Vegas material, studio outtakes from the early 70's, and a 10 minute, 42 second jam of "Don't Think Twice".

The first time I ever saw or heard of this set was in a collector's basement and I was blown away when I saw it. He played me some of the 70's material and it was great! In latter years I learned that there are two pressings of this vinyl set out there and the difference is in the labels. The cover shot is neat on the set, from the same session used on the U.K. "Almost in Love" lp.

China produced a number of Elvis vinyl boxed sets back in the 70's and here are the first of two sets that I am going to present tonight.

The first set is titled: "Elvis' Golden Records" which is a 10 lp. This set includes the lps: (1) On Stage February 1970; (2) That's The Way It Is; (3) Love Letters; (4) TV Special; (5) Elvis' Golden Records; (6)50,000,000 Elvis Fans Can't Be Wrong- Elvis' Golden Records, Volume 2; (7) Elvis' Golden Records, Volume 3; (8) Blue Hawaii; (9) Roustabout; and (10) Speedway.

Interestingly,, about a month after I picked up this sets I came across a woman who was selling her husband's record collection. That collection included several of these 10lp sets from China. None of the sets were of Elvis but of artistis like Deep Purple, Jimi Hendrix and Charley Pride. And I think there was the Beatles "Let It Be" box in there also. Anyways, I contacted her and we exchanged information and she told me that when her husband served in the United States Navy back in the late 60's - early 70's he purchased the boxed record sets while on tour in the Orient (East Asia). I found that quite interesting and a bit of a verification on what I had already known about the sets as I vaguely remeber reading in a book a long time ago that these Elvis sets were produced in the 1970's.

So after this whole sequence of events I tried really hard to obtain any information that I could on Elvis records from China and more generally any Asian countries. Unfortunately, I just couldn't find anything. So if any of your vinyl collectors know anything it would be great to hear what you know. Also, I have seen other Elvis 10 lp sets from China over the years so there is even more out there. Nice!

Elvis Collector in Canada

Posted by: ElvisCollectorInCanada Aug 14 2008, 03:06 AM

The second set is titled "Now & Before: 1956-1972" which also is a 10 lp set. This set includes the lps: (1) Elvis Now; (2) That's The Way It Is; (3) On Stage, Februiary 1970; (4) He Touched Me; (5) Elvis As Recorded at Madison Square Garden; (6) Elvis' Golden Records, Volume 3; (7) Blue Hawaii; (8) G.I. Blues; (9) 50,000,00 Elvis Fans Can't Be Wrong - Elvis' Golden Records, Volume 2; and (10) Elvis' Golden Records.

As an additional note on these two Chinese boxed sets is that I have seen more than one version of each so amazingly to me, there is more than one variation. Cooooooooool.

Is it right that they never released the seventies set on vinyl LPs?

I remember buying the sixties set from my town's only independent record shop which has since closed down, unfortunately. They had to make a special order for me and it cost exactly £50 (Pounds Sterling) and that seemed a huge amount of money then (and now!). At that time I didn't even own a CD player because I preferred vinyl records but I had to give in soon afterwards, so I think that box set must have been the last newly released vinyl LP record(s) I ever bought. Ahh, memories ...

This is a nice topic. Thanks for all the information and pictures!

Posted by: ElvisCollectorInCanada Sep 16 2008, 06:47 PM

Hi everyone,

You are correct Spider, they never did release the 70's set on vinyl. The closest they came was issuing the 70's set, along with the 50's and 60's in Cd format in a 12x12 box so it looks like a vinyl set. I have seen the European CD versions of each and also the Japanese CD versions of each. I actually had to mail order my 60's vinyl set because there was no place that imported them at the time.

Cheers,

The tracklist for this 6 LP set can be found in the book Record Collector / Price guide by Jerry Osborne; also you find there details about Candlelight LP's and other special releases. However there are no unreleased tracks to be found on these kind of releases. Also no alternates on RCA Record club or RCA Special Products releases.

A fantastic collection.
I bought the tape version while I was in Blackpool, quite a few years ago.
Always loved the cover, but rarely played the cassettes.
Still in quite a "mint" condition though, never realised it was such a rare item.

Not sure what I paid but it was quite cheap.

Did you know there is a Gold disc limited to 999 and all numbered for the AOTC also
