During the first dozen years at RCA, Elvis recorded primarily new songs. Later in his career, he began to perform and record ("cover") numerous songs that had already been big hits for someone else. The twenty such songs below were recorded by twenty different artists. Name the artists who originally recorded these songs. (The dates in parentheses refer to the years that the songs first appeared as Elvis recordings.)

1. "And I Love You So" (1975)
2. "Are You Sincere" (1973)
3. "Fairytale" (1975)
4. "Gentle On My Mind" (1969)
5. "Hurt" (1976)
6. "I Can Help" (1975)
7. "I Just Can't Help Believin' " (1970)
8. "It Keeps Right On A-Hurtin' " (1969)
9. "Love Letters" (1966)
10. "Mary In The Morning" (1970)
11. "Never Been To Spain" (1972)
12. "Only The Strong Survive" (1969)
13. "Polk Salad Annie" (1970)
14. "Put Your Hand In The Hand" (1972)
15. "Runaway" (1970)
16. "Sweet Caroline" (1970)
17. "Walk A Mile In My Shoes" (1970)
18. "The Wonder And You" (1970)
19. "Words" (1969)
20. "You Don't Have To Say You Love Me" (1970)

Bonus Question: Name three number-one hits by the Beatles that were later recorded by Elvis. A Fourth number-one hit by the Beatles was sometimes used by Elvis in Concert as a tag to one of his own hits.
What was that Song?

4. "Gentle On My Mind" (1969) GLEN CAMPBELL
Campbell had the big hit, but I believe writer John Hartford recorded it first.

9. "Love Letters" (1966) KETTY LESTER
No, it's older. It was recorded by Dick Haymes in 1945.

11. "Never Been To Spain" (1972) THREE DOG NIGHT
They had the hit, but writer Hoyt Axton recorded it himself first.

I Just Can't Help Believin' B.J. Thomas
Although Elvis mention Thomas in TTWII, there were several recordings before his. Writer Barry Mann did it in 1968 and Bob Dileo in 1969.

Only The Strong Survive Johnny Butler
Yes, Jerry Butler.

Put your Hand in the Hand - Lynn Anderson
I'm not sure if the original was by Anne Murray or Beth Moore. Both were released in 1971.

Good Correction on the Jerry Butler name!

Ketty Lester, Glen Campbell, Three Dog Night and B.J. Thomas were correct.
The Bonus you've got them...just my question though....what song was Get back used in Conjuction with?

Gotta work on that 1, 5, and 14 though!

addition:

Mary in the morning was recorded by Ed Ames in 1967 before the recording of Al Martino in the same year.
The version by Ed Ames is the original.

" During the first dozen years at RCA, Elvis recorded primarily new songs. Later in his career, he began to perform and record ("cover") numerous songs that had already been big hits for someone else. "

In the fifties Elvis covered songs from other artists too:

A fool such as I - Hank Snow 1952

Ai'nt that lovin' you baby - Eddie Riff 1956

All shook up - David Hill 1956

Apron strings - Billy the kid 1959

Baby let's play house - Arthur Gunter 1954

Blueberry hill - Gene Autry 1940

Blue Christmas - Russ Morgan 1949

Blue moon - Frankie Trumbauer and band 1934 / Connie Boswell 1934

Blue moon of Kentucky - Bill Monroe 1946

these are only two letters from the alphabet; most of the movie songs were written for Elvis.

Did you know the song Stop look and listen was recorded in 1964 by Ricky Nelson?

addition:
other covers from 50's recordings are:

Danny (not really a cover) - Cliff Richard 1959

Good rockin' tonight - Roy Brown 1947

Harbor light - several artists in 1937

Have I told you lately that I love you - Lulu Belle & Scotty 1945

Hearts of stone - The Jewells / The Champs both 1954

Here comes Santa Claus - Gene Autry 1947

Hot dog - Young Jessie 1956

Hound dog - Willie Mae Thornton 1952

How' s the world treating you - Eddie Arnold 1953

I believe - Jane Froman 1953

I don't care if the sun don't shine - several artists in 1950 but thr first was Toni Martin 1949

I got a woman - Ray Charles 1954

I'll never let you go - Jimmy Wakely 1943 / Gene Autry 1941

I love you because - Leon Payne 1949

I'm gonna sit right down and cry over you - Roy Hamilton 1954

I need you so - Ivory Joe Hunter 1950

It's no secret - Stuart Hamblen 1950

Just because - Nelston Hawaiians 1929

Lawdy Miss Clawdy - Lloyd Price 1952

Long tall Sally - Little Richard 1956

Love me - Willie & Ruth 1954

Milkcow blues boogie - Kokomo Arnold 1934

Money honey - Clyde mc Phatter & the Drifters 1953

My baby left me - Arthur Crudup 1945

Mystery train - Little Junior Parker 1953

Oh little town of Bethlehem - Trinity Choir 1920

Old shep - Red Foley around 1945 and recorded later on

One night - Smiley Lewis 1956

Peace in the valley - 1937 by several artists

Readdy teddy - Little Richard 1956

Rip it up - Little Richard 1956

Silent night - Hans Hoffmann 1902

So glad you're mine - Arthur Crudup 1949

True love - Bing Crosby & Grace Kelly 1956

Trying to get to you - The Eagles 1954

Tutti frutti - Little Richard 1956

When my blue moon turns to gold again - Willey Walker & Gene Sullivan 1941

White Christmas - Bing Crosby 1942

Your cheatin' heart - Hank Williams 1952

this list is not complete; also home recordings are not mentioned
this list gives an impression of the songs that Elvis covered; this not strange because he doesn't write his own songs.

around 480 originals are knowing to exist and it's possible that Elvis never heard an early version.

I've not mentioned cover versions from the 70's; I did this before on this forum about 6-8 weeks ago.
it's the personal taste to find out what's a better version;
