Elvis' 7th Vegas Season ~ 37 YEARS AGO "This Month" 4th September 1972, HILTON HOTEL Just before Elvis' Final Night 'Dinner Show' (8 p.m.) (IMG:http://www.elvis-tkc.com/forums/uploads/1252026055/gallery_21960_23_71018.jpg) The Group photo taken by a professional photographer ~ arranged by Colonel Parker One of Five Photos taken in Black and White and sent to England just over a Week Later. As 8" x 10" enlargements from the Original Negative. 10 fans had been sitting in the Showroom, waiting for the Start of Elvis' Dinner Show All part of the UK Elvis Fan Club Journey to see Elvis. From the front row of the Balcony, I had watched Colonel Parker, approach Some of the British Fans, and guide them to a Door to the Left of the Showroom Stage. A short time later, Tom Diskin asked 2 fans by the Right Side of the Stage, where I was sitting in the Showroom. He waved for me in the Front Row of the Balcony (with Virginia Coons) to meet him downstairs, at the entrance to the Balcony. A great surprise for me, as I was taken backstage, down to the floor below the Stage Area, to Elvis' Lounge that was opposite his Dressing Room The Photo shows the following Elvis Fans... (from Left to Right) ALAN TROWER (from SHEFFIELD England~he was wearing a Kilt, but I think - not from Scotland) TONY PRINCE (From RADIO LUXEMBOURG, a DJ on this Pop Radio Station) TODD and VICKY SLAUGHTER (OEPFC & MAGAZINE -President from LEICESTER, England & his Wife) DAVID WADE (a Travel Consultant for the Fan Club Trip) IAN BAYLIE (from Earl Shilton, near LEICESTER, Vice President of the OEPFC) "ELVIS" PAT BAYLIE (Ian's Wife from Earl Shilton-ENGLAND) REX. (from Cheltenham, Gloucestershire Branch Leader for UK FC.. ....and Also 2 Years into my ELVIS NEWS SERVICE WEEKLY) JANET BARKER (I think from the Midlands ? England) GITT NYMAND (from SWEDEN also on the Fan Club USA Holiday Trip - she took 4 Colour Photos) MAY BRITT-BERGLIND (also from SWEDEN.. friend of GITT) -------------------- |

But even without that, its a Memory of a Life time, and the First Picture.. My Photo of a Lifetime. Elvis' 7th Vegas Season ~ 37 YEARS AGO "This Week" 4th September 1972, HILTON HOTEL ~ Just before Elvis' Final Night 'Dinner Show' (8 p.m.) This picture was taken just after Elvis entered the Room. I think it was decided before, that all the Guys would be introduced to Elvis First and then the Girls in the party. Todd was introduced first by Tom Diskin, then acted as spokesman, for the whole group. We sort of made a line towards Elvis near the Door. I remember a Green Leather Chair almost next to Elvis, with wide arms, flat on the top. Todd next introduced Ian, followed by Tony Prince. I was the 4th to meet Elvis, we all shook Elvis' hand at each introduction, Elvis' grip was very firm.... after my handshake, I said to Elvis I had brought these bound issues of my ELVIS WEEKLY NEWS SERVICE (TWO) and my Fanfare 1971 booklet and some other papers. I put them on the Flat arm rest of the Chair, thinking about all the others waiting to meet Elvis.... and hoping Elvis would have time to look at them later. But instead he bent slightly and quickly looked through the start of the booklet with my Elvis Weekly Newsheets ~ sitting on the Edge of that chair... a few moments later, straightening up he reached out and Shook My Hand a Second Time, saying I WANT TO THANKYOU VERY MUCH FOR THIS... Elvis' Eyes at the same time met Mine - so close, so Expressive it just went straight at me and into me and I knew he meant it. (IMG:http://www.elvis-tkc.com/forums/uploads/1252026055/gallery_21960_23_58467.jpg)
Notice the grip when Elvis takes Tony Prince' hand, and the size compaired to Tony's you can see the Microphone just showing out of the Red Shoulder Bag. One of the colour photos taken by Swedish Fan "Gitt Nyman" -------------------- |

MauricePColgan Posted Today, 05:20 PM Congratulations Rex. Superb thread. We all would have just loved such a glorious opportunity! ... Thanks to Everyone.. Yes Bradley, I'm going to give this the complete works... I first reviewed the Meeting in my ELVIS WEEKLY #73~74 on ~ 11th Sept 1972 (just 1 week after the meeting) MY FIRST TRIP TO THE USA & SEEING ELVIS. Having talked to Maria and Gladys Davies for 3 years, about her 3 trips to watch Elvis, my best mate "John Andrews" and myself, had finally saved up enough pennies to make our own trip to the States. We arranged to travel to LA with two other fans from London "CHRISTINE COLCLOUGH" and "ROSALINDA COSENTINO" on the 15th August. I had just 8 days Unpaid Holiday available to me. They had a special Youth Fare Airflight Rate (under 26 years) of £126 return. Virginia Coons met us all at the Airport, such a great Elvis fan, the following day she took us to Elvis' Hollywood Star, and the California Homes. The following day the 4 of us travelled to Vegas by Greyhound Bus. - I filmed the many Elvis Advert Signs which lined the Highway, into Vegas. We had reservations for 2 double rooms at the HILTON, and although the place was busy, got booked in pretty quickly. The girls had booked the Show Reservations... and went to check everything would be OK. We all chipped in $10 each extra to tip Emellio. 17th August DINNER and MIDNIGHT shows - I went in with John, Christine and Rosalinda. After also tipping the waiter $30 more.. we got seated right down on the Front tables next to the Stage. The Hilton had Photo Girls ! in the Showroom and after Dinner, but before Elvis' Show, we accepted having our Picture taken at our table by the Stage This is that photo.... "THE FAB FOUR IN VEGAS" I taped all the shows from the 17th August (although 3 are not complete) 17th August 1972 Dinner and Midnight Shows (Front tables next to Stage) Taped but not Filmed. 18th August to 22nd August (both shows = 12 total) I was Front Row Balcony, various positions. FILMED EVERY NIGHT. My 3 friends stay Ended and they had to leave for LA and the flight home. (they had been Front Tables every Night) I was supposed to fly back with them..... BUT didn't want to Return... Had to stay to see what happened next. So Waved them goodbye at the Greyhound Bus Station in Vegas. My Hilton Hotel booking was up when John left, so I moved in with 2 Australian Fans that had won a Free Trip to LA~VEGAS and Disneyland.. Part of the Holiday was staying at the Hilton, said they lost a Key, so I would have one... and I used to crash out for a few hours in a corner of the room on cushions and spare blankets. (With thanks to RCA AUSTRALIA and the Aussie Newspaper for the Room) 23rd August to 26th August (both shows = 8 total) Filmed every night front row Balcony. after 2 days, the Aussie fans should have gone to LA and Disney - but they wanted to stay also... So we all moved over to the Sommerset Motel (behind the Landmark) up to the 26th. My 3 English friends had been spending $25 a night each to be on the Front Row. I had only been spending $10 a night for Front Row Balcony - without any Tipping ! ! ! (I also didn't have to stand in any of the LINES.. could just walk right in 30 minutes before the show) So had managed to spin out my Dollars for all the Extra shows up to then..... and the Hotel thing hadn't been much extra to my stay...... Plus I had now seen 20 shows in August. -------------------- |

Rex just a question that came to mind what is the footage like,
OK to Excellent - 10 to 1 Zoom Lens-Front Row Balcony is it clear Some is very clear, Some more soft focus, but mostly Very good. with sound ? not on the film when taking... Striped it and added it from the Tapes later. 4 hours 15min total ...do you watch it alot nowdays? - Not much since 70s... just transfered some 1971 Vegas film to DVD, so 1972 might be next...!!! The girl that took these photos (as slides) used a 200mm and 400mm lens... So my films are between what she took as Transparencies. The later part of the season, we sat together front row balcony at some weekend shows... Two Piece from August 1972 ~ Jumpsuit from September 1972

MY FIRST TRIP TO THE USA & SEEING ELVIS. That weekend 25-26th Aug, Virginia Coons and some Friends had arrived for 5 shows. So on the 27th, I returned to LA with them. until Labour Day Weekend. While in LA, I arranged for my Flight ticket to be changed to the 5th September.(or it may have been 6th?) Cashed in Half of the Return Greyhound Bus Ticket, and cabled my Bank for some Extra Cash. that had been clearing, while I was away.. Bought some more tapes and Super 8mm films... and was ready to return with Virginia and Friends, for the last 7 shows of September 1972. 2nd September - Dinner and Midnight (Filmed and Taped Front Row Balcony at all "7") 3rd September - Special 3am show -(this started 1 hour after the Midnight show finished) 3rd September - Dinner and Midnight 4th September - Dinner and Midnight (it was the 5th Sept when Elvis finished) So I really shouldn't have still been in Vegas ! and not only did I see all those shows "27" I GOT THE "CHERRY" ON TOP "MEETING" WITH ELVIS..... MY DREAM CAME TRUE !!!!! (IMG:http://www.elvis-tkc.com/forums/uploads/1252026055/gallery_21960_23_324290.jpg)

MY FIRST TRIP TO THE USA & SEEING ELVIS. (IMG:http://www.elvis-tkc.com/forums/uploads/1252176741/gallery_21960_23_155203.jpg) The Hotel had changed to the Hilton from being the International the year before. On the 2nd September, you could pick up these free Postcards, on glossy card announcing the 3am Show. (I have them in PINK~YELLOW and BLUE) On the 4th September I was in the balcony (front row far right) for the dinner show. Todd, Vicki Ian & Pat Baylie, & Tony Prince were in the Colonels Booth downstairs, just before 8pm they were all taken to one of the exits close to the stage along with 2 girls from Sweden & one fan in a kilt. It wasn't hard to guess they were being taken BACKSTAGE TO MEET ELVIS. At this point Tom Diskin seemed to be looking for someone, & it turned out it was me. Well he found someone who knew I was sitting in the balcony and he waved for me to come down and met him. Tom knew I wanted to meet Elvis ~ from USA Elvis fans that knew him well like Virginia Coons and Jane Winston ~ they had been asking him as soon as we arrived, if it would be possible for the four of us to go backstage. What I didn’t know in the middle of August, was that TOM was finalizing his plans to get married to YANIQUE GOMEZ (a young French Lady that had been sent by MGM France with an award for Elvis ~ needing to go through Colonel Parkers Office in California, she had met Tom, and he had arranged the meeting in 1970.. from that they had started dating on a regular basis..) So in August Tom’s mind was on anything but arranging that Elvis Meeting… Now of course my 3 English friends had returned home… I'd had a few days back in Los Angeles… so as soon as we came back to Vegas, Yanique, who knew Virginia and Jane and her daughters very well. TOLD THEM THE NEWS that she was now Mrs. Diskin.. They had got married near the end of August, and even gone away for a few days Honeymoon in Lake Tahoe, returning in time for the final Elvis September shows. In my mind I had given up any thoughts that I would be able to meet Elvis this trip ! –The hotel had been pretty busy when I arrived in august, but that Labour Day Holiday the place really was buzzing, over 200 British and Europe fans had arrived on the UK Fan Club Trip, a lot of Australian fans also, and a good few very sweet and friendly fans from Japan, you only had to say hello and have a quick chat with them, and they gave you little Japanese gifts.. Many of the new Elvis fan arrivals I knew very well from fan club events in England and Europe - an NBC TV film crew arrived on the 3rd September, thru to the 5th. And in the casino~reception~waiting lines for the next shows, and souvenir shop near the entrance and foyer were very busy grabbing interviews… With so much activity... I couldn’t imagine a meeting being arranged for little ‘Ol Me. Tom knew about the British Fans meeting, the Colonel had set it up the previous day… which is why everyone was so well dressed (see photos) for the occasion. While I was just in a casual shirt, having arrived with clothes for just seven days.. I was now well into my 3rd week in the States… also over 100 unprocessed Super 8mm cartridges was totally filling up my suitcase (apart from the souvenirs!!!) so the few garments I did have I would probably dump in a bin, to get everything home. I think I had bought a couple of new shirts on my 2nd visit to LA a few days earlier. Sitting with my 3 drinks, tape recorder deck, and 2 microphones ready to capture the start of Elvis’ 8pm show on the final night of the season… 25 shows so far notched up …!!! Inside My shirt around my waistline 10 or so Chunky Super 8mm Cartridges, a Movie Camera with a Massive ~ large 10 to 1 Zoom Lens, with fresh batteries and loaded ready to go.. And suddenly I’m watching Tom below me at the Stage talking to the 2 daughters of Jane and Virginia, wondering why, and what that’s about…??? Then to see him turn in the direction the girls are pointing to the Mums I’m sitting with... and the total SHOCK to find out it was ME HE WAS LOOKING FOR, in this audience of 1000s waiting to watch Elvis’ next thrilling show. (IMG:http://www.elvis-tkc.com/forums/uploads/1252026055/gallery_21960_23_990132.jpg)
Taken after the Introductions, and Posed Group photo - shows ALAN~TONY PRINCE~VICKY~ELVIS and PAT BAYLIE. Elvis' shirt, collar and necklace are a little out of alignment due to recent hugs and kisses with the girls ! ! ! -------------------- |

I have films from 25 of them, including the dates you list. And tapes of them all also. But it won't be in this topic.... it will be in a NEW TOPIC Later his year. The films all run in date order, and usually have Elvis Walking on and the Closing Curtain. I have a number of indepth reviews I did for my Elvis News Service, and extra detailed reviews by CHRISTINE COLCLOUGH and extra comments from fans like Ann Nixon, and Rita Overhead (she met Elvis on the 3rd Sept) Plus some Diary notes. QUOTE I recently came across an ELVIS EVENT FLYER I sent out in Mid-September 1972.
Which lists the 4 hours+ of film... Elvis FANS would get a chance to View... all this film just over 3 weeks after the final show. I worked like crazy to get all the 100 cartridges processed at Kodak, joined them all up in the Correct Date and song order onto 400ft reels. Rushed these reels off to have a Magnetic Sound Strip added to the Edge. And then Night and Day worked on adding all the sound, in time for this Event... (and managed to write a few reviews and put some ELVIS NEWS SERVICES OUT.) Some highlights Included.... Ann Nixon got to view (for the 1st time) her standing up to give Elvis a Scarf and the Kiss. Elvis splitting his pants Twice, and once throwing them out into the Audience on ....."UNTIL ITS TIME FOR YOU TO 'SEW' " I captured all the Songs Elvis did during 25 of the shows, some multiple versions. "VEGAS" ~ Autographs I collected in AUGUST 1972 (IMG:http://www.elvis-tkc.com/forums/uploads/1252266319/gallery_21960_29_248155.jpg) NEXT CHAPTER: GETTING TO ~ AND GOING BACKSTAGE TOM indicated to meet him downstairs… quickly I ducked under the table, to get rid of all the film cartridges in my shirt, next to the tape deck and placed the Cine Camera under my jacket (which I suppose I should have worn backstage – but was just thinking about hiding all the things for the show, that didn’t seem right to take backstage!) This was only the Start of a Frantic Rushing Around…. Because the 3 Special Bound Albums (Booklets) I had made up in England of the Elvis News Service Issues from No. # 2l to # 72 are sitting in the trunk of LEN and ROSEMARIE LEECHs Car just outside and close around the corner of the Hotel Entrance. (Luckily I didn't have to find the Keys, as I had one of the spare keys from Len) also inside my first 2 printed booklets Elvis Fanfare 1971 and Elvis Style ~Plus the most recent copies of the just started Dutch & French (Belgium) issues of my News Service (by John Brus and Louis Keyser) also A REVIEW BY STEVE MORSE (Stoke on Trent) OF MY LAST 2 DAY FILM FESTIVAL, and I ALSO HAD A STILL CAMERA IN THE CAR. SO I HAVE THIS MAD DASH THROUGH THE BALCONY AREA DOWN THE STAIRS. THROUGH THE CASINO & ENTRANCE AREA..PAST THE SOUVENIR BOOTH OUT OF THE HOTEL THROUGH THE SWING DOORS THEN ROUND THE CORNER,INTO ONE OF THE CLOSEST PARKING AREAS.. LUCKILY FINDING THE RIGHT KEY TO OPEN THE CAR BOOT and THEN THE DASH BACK. IN THAT TIME ~MR.DISKIN HAS GONE UP TO MY TABLE IN THE BALCONY AND BACK DOWN AGAIN (PHEW..) WELL HE IS WAITING FOR ME AT THE SHOWROOM BALCONY ENTRANCE, & I'M A LITTLE BREATHLESS FROM ALL THAT RUNNING AROUND. I MEAN HE COULD HAVE THOUGHT I DIDN'T WANT TO GO….. WELL I'M TAKEN BACKSTAGE, Walking along passages - Tom looked at my 35mm camera, saying “You probably Won't need that” (I had know idea what that meant) – he also said to me to ask about Elvis Jewellery…. I didn't at the time take that to mean… well thats a nice ring, and Elvis might give it to me, which I think maybe that’s what Tom meant! It was ages afterwards when getting stories of Elvis giving gifts to unknown fans that I got his true meaning of that Statement. My mind was racing.. about the fans already taken backstage, and had they met Elvis already.. was I going to be on my own.. wishing I'd grabbed a pen and menu with all the other things under my arm… So we arrived at the door.. (I'm thinking he's already in this room) The FANS in the room are waiting for Elvis to arrive, and the door opens…and Tom and Myself enter.. Yes they thought it was the Elvis Moment about to happen, but it was only me.. I knew 5 of the fans very well.. I think they were just a bit surprised I had made it also.. I remember talking to Todd, Ian and Tony Prince, they must have been waiting 10 minutes or so.. maybe it was delayed slightly because of Tom Diskin coming to look for me, and my doing a 4 minute mile. Enjoying every word written, Rex. You have so much more detail available than most fans that got to see him. Such a treasure to read the details. Thanks so much for letting us travel back in time with you and thanks for saving every little tidbit of information through the years (and all the moves). It is truly a joy to read.
