Isn't it from the same show as the "Separate Ways" cover shot... I'm under the impression that they were both snapped during the April 11, 1972 Roanoke show. ... See these picture as an example... to my eyes they all look like they were taken on the same show, by the same photographer. Thanks "Jouni" yes that would sort of make sense... but I guess they could be taking pictures on the complete tour. In the book Ed Bonja put out did he give a list of the Shows he took pictures at? (afraid I don't have it.) Maybe his forthcoming new book will give more clues ! ? -------------------- |

You are, of course, correct... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blush.gif) I went by memory on this one based on an old discussion somewhere else. Then I found a version where the platform could be seen, and that proved that it indeed was from Roanoke...all of which goes to show that I'm wrong more often than not... Wasn't this one from Mobile, Al June 2nd 1975 evening show? That's the date I also have for the picture. ...I don't have Bonja's book anymore, but there's a possibility that it was dated as 'Memphis June 10, 1975' on it, and hence the wrong infos... wouldn't be the first time with Bonja's pictures... And as it's known by now, it's a "fixed" image too... they made Elvis look slimmer on it... and if I'm correct it's not the only cover where Elvis' apperance was altered.

Part Interview with ED BONJA by Elvis Information Network
unfortunately he doesn't give or is asked the Venue or date! EIN - Which reminds me of that great shot on the front of the album From EP Boulevard with Elvis in his 'Indian Feather' suit pointing the finger at you. That is such a good photo. Ed - I agree with you. That was the last concert I shot. And that picture is one of the most used photos of Elvis in history; it's on everything. They did a little airbrushing to it to try & match his image but it's an amazing shot of Elvis in 1975. There was a real gap in RCA's photos from Aloha to that shot of Elvis 2 years later. -------------------- |

This has Ed being asked about Seperate Way LP... but doesn't get to the real questions he should have been asked....
followed about the Graceland Picture instead of a Live Concert picture.... and then getting EP Blvd with a concert picture.. Thats the Colonel for you ! ! ! EIN - It almost seems a power thing where The Colonel is saying, "You can have this, but I've got better." I mean, what was he doing on the Separate Ways LP with Elvis in a white jumpsuit standing on a highway? The Colonel didn't have an arts degree did he? ! Ed - (laughing) No I think he failed that class! That LP cover was The Colonel's inspiration! Boy, if you could ever get into his mind, you'd go crazy thinking about it! EIN - So why didn't the Elvis Live In Memphis LP have a dynamic concert photo on the cover? Ed - RCA really wanted to beat the bootleggers on that one and so Tom Diskin talked to The Colonel & suggested that I get some good shots of the concert, so that we could get it out immediately. However, The Colonel already had other plans. He knew someone on the Memphis Commercial Appeal whose son was going to college & studying photography. Without anyone else knowing it The Colonel had arranged for this guy to take the pictures of that show. So when Tom Diskin suggested he make sure I brought my camera along The Colonel replied, "No, don't worry about that. When The Colonel needs pictures I can just snap my fingers." So I did as I was told and I didn't take any shots of that show. When we got back to our office at MGM studios a few days went by and a package arrived and it was all these photos this guy had taken. And they were all just terrible! The Colonel's tearing them up going, "What is this crap!" Suddenly he's screaming, "EDDIE, you need to get to Memphis tonight and get some pictures." So that night they booked a red-eye reservation to get me to Memphis. Lamar Fike met me at 6am at the airport and I went straight to Graceland and I shot the back, the front, the grounds. I still have a few proofs including some of me taking those photos! I was back in L.A by four in the afternoon and again The Colonel picked the cover shot. I had an even better one, with the edges of the mansion cut off which gave it a better, surreal look. You know, he should have let me choose the pictures! So that's the reason why it is Elvis' only live album of the seventies without a concert shot of him on the front! Of course the 1976 LP recorded at Graceland strangely did use a live concert cover photo! -------------------- |

I have just looked In the Tunzi book ELVIS STANDING ROOM ONLY ,,it has this down as 18th April 72 San Antonio Texas? Simply wrongly dated there, like many others too; in this case it's easily seen by the different kind of band platform. -------------------- The stranger in the crowd and I would be strangers no more!
