1759 - Parson Mason Weems was born. He is remembered for his fictitious stories that he presented as fact. He was responsible for the story about George Washington cutting down his father's cherry tree.
1881 - David Henderson Houston patented the first roll film for cameras. 1958 - Pioneer 1, a lunar probe, was launched by the U.S. The probe did not reach its destination and fell back to Earth and burned up in the atmosphere. 1958 - The Elvis Presley album "King Creole" hit #2 in the U.S. 1968 - Apollo 7 was launched by the U.S. The first manned Apollo mission was the first in which live television broadcasts were received from orbit. Wally Schirra, Don Fulton Eisele and R. Walter Cunningham were the astronauts aboard. 1984 - Mario Lemieux (Pittsburgh Penguins) made his debut in the National Hockey League (NHL) against the Boston Bruins. 1492 - Christopher Columbus, an Italian explorer, sighted Watling Island in the Bahamas. He believed that he had found Asia while attempting to find a Western ocean route to India. The same day he claimed the land for Isabella and Ferdinand of Spain.
1810 - Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig married Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen. The royalty invited the public to attend the event which became an annual celebration that later became known as Oktoberfest. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/cheers.gif) 1915 - British nurse Edith Cavell was executed by a German firing squad for helping Allied soldiers escape from Belgium during World War I. 1960 - Soviet premier Nikita Khrushchev pounded a shoe on his desk during a dispute at a U.N. General Assembly (why is this history you ask?) 1984 - An attempt on British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher's life was unsuccessful, but did take the lives of five people. The bomb had been planted by the I.R.A. 1997 - The St. Francis Basilica and 15th-century bell tower above Foligno city hall in Italy were damaged by 3 earthquakes. 1999 - Rob Reiner received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. 1999 - The book "Elvis Day by Day" by Peter Guralnick and Ernst Jorgensen was released. 2002 - In Bali, Indonesia, over 180 people were killed and over 300 were injured when a bomb was detonated in a nightclub district. -------------------- |

The British victory effectively ended an further U.S. invasion of Canada. 1951 - In Atlanta, GA, a football with a rubber covering was used for the first time. Georgia Tech beat Louisiana State 25-7. 1956 - The Elvis Presley single "Blue Moon" hit #55 in the U.S. 1963 - Elvis Presley and a film crew traveled to the Big Bear resort in San Bernadino Mountains for location shooting for "Kissin' Cousins." Shooting began the next day. 1981 - Egyptian voters elected Vice President Hosni Mubarak as the new president one week after Anwar Sadat was assassinated. 1992 - A commercial flight record was set by an Air France supersonic jetliner for circling the Earth in 33 hours and one minute. 1998 - The Elvis Presley album "Memories - The '68 Comeback Special" was released. 2010 - Near Copiapó, Chile, 33 miners were trapped underground in San José Mine. 1795 - The country of Poland was divided up between Austria, Prussia, and Russia. 1901 - Daredevil Anna Edson Taylor became the first person to go over Niagara Falls in a wooden barrel. She was 63 years old. 1960 - Arkansas State University inducted Elvis Presley into the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity as an honorary member. 1969 - Richard Burton bought his wife Elizabeth Taylor a 69-carat Cartier diamond ring for $1.5 million. 1886 - The Statue of Liberty was dedicated in New York Harbor by U.S. President Cleveland. The statue weighs 225 tons and is 152 feet tall. It was originally known as "Liberty Enlightening the World."
1922 - Benito Mussolini took control of the Italian government and introduced fascism to Italy. 1940 - During World War II, Italy invaded Greece. 1956 - Elvis Presley's song "Love Me Tender" became the #1 Billboard Pop Hit. He became the first artist to follow himself into the #1 position. The song "Don't Be Cruel/Hound Dog" had been the #1 song for 11 weeks. 1956 - Elvis Presley appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show for the second time. He performed "Don't Be Cruel," "Love Me Tender," "Hound Dog" and "Love Me." Sullivan presented Presley with a gold disc for "Love Me Tender." 1960 - Elvis Presley's single "It's Now Or Never" was released in Britain. 1968 - Filming began on the Elvis Presley movie "The Trouble With Girls (And How To Get Into It)." 1972 - Elvis Presley's single "Burning Love" hit #2 in the U.S. 1984 - The New York City Marathon was marred by its first fatality when a French runner who collapsed and died. 1988 - Roussel Uclaf, a French manufacturer that produces the abortion pill RU486, announced it would resume distribution of the drug after the government of France demanded it do so. 1998 - An Air China jet was hijacked and flown to Taiwan by pilot Yuan Bin. 1926 - Magician Harry Houdini died of gangrene and peritonitis resulting from a ruptured appendix. His appendix had been damaged twelve days earlier when he had been punched in the stomach by a student unexpectedly. During a lecture Houdini had commented on the strength of his stomach muscles and their ability to withstand hard blows. 1940 - The British air victory in the Battle of Britain prevented Germany from invading Britain. 1941 - The U.S. Navy destroyer Reuben James was torpedoed by a German submarine near Iceland. The U.S. had not yet entered World War II. More than 100 men were killed. 1960 - Elvis Presley ended his first lengthy gospel music session. He had began the session the day before. Much of the work appeared on the 1961 album "His Hand In Mine." 1962 - The Elvis Presley film "Girls! Girls! Girls!" had its world premiere in Honolulu, HI. 1993 - The play "Wonderful Tennessee" closed after only 9 performances. 1998 - Iraq announced that it was halting all dealings with U.N. arms inspectors. 1895 - Wilhelm Roentgen while experimenting with electricity discovered the scientific principle involved and took the first X-ray pictures. 1910 - William H. Frost patented the insect exterminator. 1948 - Elvis Presley was enrolled in the eighth grade at Humes High School in Memphis, TN. 1957 - The Elvis Presley film "Jailhouse Rock" was released in the U.S. 1958 - The Elvis Presley albums "King Creole" and "Elvis' Golden Records" hit #3 and #4 in the U.K. 1962 - Elvis Presley's father and Memphis Mayor Loeb visted Elvis on the set of "It Happened at the World's Fair". At the meeting the mayor accepted Elvis's annual donation of $50,000 to Memphis charities 1980 - Scientists at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California announced that they had discovered a 15th moon orbiting the planet Saturn. 1986 - Vyacheslav M. Molotov died at age 96.
