Hi M-M,

It would take quite some time to really answer your question but I will give you a short version:

According to Billboard Magazine, Garth Brooks has sold more albums in the U.S.A. than Elvis but not by many (under 5 million). However, this is down to the Billboard accounting rules which do not favour Elvis. Most of Garth's albums have been multiple disc albums and Billboard rules state that each album in a multi-disc set counts as one sale - so a 10 disc Box set which sells 100 copies is counted as having sold 1000 copies providing each disc is over 100 minutes in length. In Elvis' lifetime, this rule did not apply as one could not store 100 minutes on a disc. 'The Aloha From Hawaii' and 'Elvis In Concert' albums suffered from this and if the current rule applied then both of those albums would now have sold over 10 million each. What Billboard never mention is that Brooks has sold very few singles compared to Elvis and it is this discrepancy which makes Brooks tally look good. Singles and albums combined Elvis easily outsells Brooks in the U.S.A. and the rest of the World.
In addition, SONY(U.S.A.) now appear reluctant to upgrade Elvis' sales awards due to the fact that they do not sell more records for them. So much for their loyalty to their greatest artist ever! Of course Elvis never had the luxury of modern day technology and changing chart rules e.g. downloading and streaming, mobile phones, MP3's, tablets etc.

Whatever, Elvis will ALWAYS be THE KING. Nobody can take that away from him despite their attempt to do so by modern technology and changing chart rules.

Thanks very much Brian. I appreciate the informative thoughts. I suspect in many ways, then, the playing field so-to-speak is not level when comparing artists from different generations. You comment about Sony is enlightening. Gosh, it seems that during his lifetime Elvis' management, even RCA, and now Sony, are not interested in facts just trying to milk him for all they could get out of him. You would think that Billboard would "correct" this situation for the sake of historical accuracy. Or perhaps they still don't care much for Elvis Presley or his amazing legacy.

I hope you don't mind a personal note: for a short while, my Dad (before I was born) was what they called a record promoter. He traveled mainly in the Philadelphia and Baltimore markets. Through the company he worked for he would be given records to take to promoters and radio stations seeking air play. This was especially true of new artists of which there were many in the mid-to-late 50's and 60's. I can remember years later how many had such hatred for Elvis and his music. I certainly had read a number of books over the years and seen video of this as many of us have. But my Dad experienced it first hand and reported that in many circles that feeling was strong in the mid-fifties. He told me of a couple of records on the Sun label by Elvis that he received and was asked to promote. The radio stations he visited here in the Northeast of the US wanted nothing to do with playing them. In several cases Dad told me he was literally thrown out of offices and he couldn't even play the Elvis records for them. Incredible times.....

I agree 100% with you on your final thought about Elvis.
