During the first dozen years at RCA, Elvis recorded primarily new songs. Later in his career, he began to perform and record ("cover") numerous songs that had already been big hits for someone else. The twenty such songs below were recorded by twenty different artists. Name the artists who originally recorded these songs. (The dates in parentheses refer to the years that the songs first appeared as Elvis recordings.)
1. "And I Love You So" (1975) 2. "Are You Sincere" (1973) 3. "Fairytale" (1975) 4. "Gentle On My Mind" (1969) 5. "Hurt" (1976) 6. "I Can Help" (1975) 7. "I Just Can't Help Believin' " (1970) 8. "It Keeps Right On A-Hurtin' " (1969) 9. "Love Letters" (1966) 10. "Mary In The Morning" (1970) 11. "Never Been To Spain" (1972) 12. "Only The Strong Survive" (1969) 13. "Polk Salad Annie" (1970) 14. "Put Your Hand In The Hand" (1972) 15. "Runaway" (1970) 16. "Sweet Caroline" (1970) 17. "Walk A Mile In My Shoes" (1970) 18. "The Wonder And You" (1970) 19. "Words" (1969) 20. "You Don't Have To Say You Love Me" (1970) Bonus Question: Name three number-one hits by the Beatles that were later recorded by Elvis. A Fourth number-one hit by the Beatles was sometimes used by Elvis in Concert as a tag to one of his own hits. What was that Song? -------------------- "The man who can sing when he hasn't got a thing is the King, of the whole wide world." |

4. "Gentle On My Mind" (1969) GLEN CAMPBELL Campbell had the big hit, but I believe writer John Hartford recorded it first. 9. "Love Letters" (1966) KETTY LESTER No, it's older. It was recorded by Dick Haymes in 1945. 11. "Never Been To Spain" (1972) THREE DOG NIGHT They had the hit, but writer Hoyt Axton recorded it himself first. I Just Can't Help Believin' B.J. Thomas Although Elvis mention Thomas in TTWII, there were several recordings before his. Writer Barry Mann did it in 1968 and Bob Dileo in 1969. Only The Strong Survive Johnny Butler Yes, Jerry Butler. Put your Hand in the Hand - Lynn Anderson
I'm not sure if the original was by Anne Murray or Beth Moore. Both were released in 1971. -------------------- "I'll Never Get Out Of This World Alive..." |
