Mean Woman Blues

Words & Music: Claude DeMetrius

Lyrics:

I got a woman,
Mean as she can be
I got a woman,
Mean as she can be
Sometimes I think
She's almost mean as me

A black cat up and died of fright
'Cause she crossed his path last night
Oh, I got a woman
Mean as she can be
Sometimes I think
She's almost mean as me

She kiss so hard, she bruise my lips
Hurts so good, my heart just flips
Oh, I got a woman
Mean as she can be
Sometimes I think
She's almost mean as me

The strangest gal I ever had
Never happy 'less she's mad
Oh, I got a woman
Mean as she can be
Sometimes I think
She's almost mean as me

She makes love without a smile
Ooh, hot dog that drives me wild
Oh, I got a woman
Mean as she can be
Sometimes I think
She's almost mean as me

additional info:

the master take 13 can be found on Essential Elvis vol. 2 in binaural.

for the movie version extra recordings were made:
15-01-57 - track B, this recording is lost;

21-01-57 - track BX take 7, this re-recording is released on Loving you FTD;

22-01-57 - track BY take 1 = studio master + additional lines;

the movie version is spliced from track BX take 7 intro & ending /track BY take 1 and some parts of the studio version.

Roy Orbison had a big hit with the song in 1963.

Once again, a great song!! This truly deserves to be in the spotlight!! I adore this song, it's so bluesy, I can't help but clap, snap my fingers and shake my head....It's one of the great examples of what early rock'n'roll is like!! Great info you guys!!

Id go along with that, a truly great track and a great scene in the film to go along with it.

as a footnote here in the UK this was released as a 7inch single backed with I BEG OF YOU in 1989

and an four track 12inch single the same year with a DUB version of MWB

I agree. This gem is very underrated! This song is a classic song from the seminal days of Rock 'n' Roll. I just love this one and all of the takes of it that have been released.
