Soundtrack Sessions - Stay Away, Joe, October 1, 1967
Lyrics:
Stay Away Joe
( Weisman - Wayne)
Ho jump down, spin around, let's have a party
Look who's back, Stay Away Joe
Chock taw, chick a Shaw, gonna drink me hearty
Welcome back, Stay Away Joe
Stay Away Joe they call me
Stay Away Joe oh yeah!
But if you need me call me
Hoop and a holler and I'll be there
Ho!
Who keeps turnin' up like a bad penny
Take one guess, Stay Away Joe
Always findin' trouble a-plenty
Oh my yes, I reckon you know
Stay Away Joe they call me
Stay Away Joe oh yeah!
But if you need me call me
Hoop and a holler and I'll be there
Ho!
Ho!
When two lips are right for the pickin'
Who crops up
I love them and leave them screamin' 'n kickin'
Giddy up look at him look at him go
Stay Away Joe they call me
Stay Away Joe oh yeah!
But if you need me call me
Hoop and a holler and I'll be there
Ho!
Hey!
Note's:
The live recording of Stay Away, Joe that was released by mistake on the first Camden "Almost in Love" LP is actually the movie version of the song. So contrary to conclusions made in "A Life in Music" ("Elvis sang nineteen takes with the band with no success." ), take 17 probably was considered a success by M.G.M.
The movie harmonica opening and the full band end title may have been recorded on this session.
The original demos of "Stay Away, Joe", and "All I Needed Was The Rain" were performed by Glen Campell.

A great choice in this song Steve has a great tempo and the song is just full of fun and life
Not a movie song that sticks out for me......but ok all the same. Was a fun movie though
Truly a "different sounding" song.....Not a favorite by a long shot, but enjoyable all the same!
Another great, informative post, Steve......Thanks!
A happy enough song but one that just doesn't work for me even though Elvis seems to be doing his best to enjoy it.
the composers added new lyrics to an old tune " pick a bale o' cotton " as originally recorded by Huddie Leadbetter in 1935
colonel snow
One of the best Elvis photo LP.
Great!!!!!!!!
I will give this song a spin when I have the chance ... am unfamiliar with this song.
I just love this song! I don't know, Elvis, singing this song actually feels like he's having fun doing it....Truly a up beat and fun fun song, I also believe that Elvis had fun making "Stay away, Joe"...great info Steve!
I always "get a kick" out of playing this song....quite funny and has that "hillbilly" style to it
Thanks for the info Steve
If this song don"t get you BOPPIN" around the house!!?.
